Yesterday, Press Secretary Jay Carney announced that President Obama supports the Respect Marriage Act, a bill that you repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. DOMA became law in 1996 when only 27% of people supported the rights of same sex couples to marry. Multiple polls this year have shown more people support same sex marriages than oppose them.
Carney said “This legislation would uphold the principle that the federal government should not deny gay and lesbian couples the same rights and legal protections as straight couples.”
