02/02/2008  I know you used to have a web site telling young people to vote. You should make some reminder or good widgets for us to use on our web sites with that in mind. I think that would be cool to have them, and help others remember to vote! Thanks DALE.

12/28/2007  No question. Just sending thanks for doing this. Matthew's story broke my heart nearly ten years ago, and still breaks it today. Not a day goes by without my thinking of Matthew. I am sure we would have been good friends, had I had the honor of meeting him. I even convinced my younger brother to name his first son Matthew. If there is ever anything I can do to help, please let me know. I have helped a lot of young people with the coming out process. My love to Judy. I would love to meet her. God bless you, and your work! Brian
04/21/2010  Dear Mrs. Shepard: There are times when the work of trying to reduce hatred seems a bit overwhelming. I feel like I am making little progress with the web site I created and maintain. Your work gives me a lot of hope, because I feel others are making a real difference, and that perhaps we can eventually reach a time when people are no longer bullied because of who they are. Thank you very much for making such a big difference. Gary Simpson http://www.createdgay.com
05/08/2008  There is not a day that does not go by that I do not think of Matthew. I have a picture of him on my dresser.

03/06/2009  Hi I am the librarian for the Ft. Collins PFLAG and I am interested in finding a copy of the film Out In The Cold. I saw that you contributed in several ways to this film and thought perhaps you could have some suggestions as to where to find a copy. I think it would be excellent to have in our library. Thanks so much for you time and effort on this matter, Mareye Bullock (970)224-4082
07/15/2010  Dear Matthew's Team, Thank you for the oportunity to write. I am a public school teacher in Georgia for almost fourteen years. My new book, "Other Voices in the Rooms: Stories in Two Suites", has just been published. The second suite of stories, sub-titled "Stories of Love, Faith, and Devotion", are a set of twelve stories containing at least half of the twelve stories dealing with gay and lesbian themes. They are written to illustrate the beauty, dignity, and diversity of all loving, human relationships. I dedicated that suite of stories to the memory of Matthew. To me, that dedication was a way to widen the memory of Matthew, and the best manner in which to foster the Foundation's fundamental focus to "stop the hate". I am signing two copies and fowarding them to the Casper Office. One one is for the team, and the other copy is for Matthew's parents, Judy and Dennis. My question revolves around the my idea of gaining the support of the Foundation to market the book, which is fiction, on its website, and my establishment of donating a percentage of proceeds from sales to the Matthew Shepard Foundation. I will be mailing the books tomorrow, Friday, 16 July. I look forward to your response with regard to my question. All the best, Robin St. Taw
07/27/2008  I was wondering, do you have the Russian version of your site?Do you have Russian department? I think that this foundation can be supported in our country too. If you will find my idea interesting, please contact me by e-mail. Thank you, Kirillina Alina
10/15/2007  Hi. The website is great! Just wanted to let you know of a correction that needs to be made for New Leaf in San Francisco. I am the Clinical Director for New Leaf: Services for Our Community and Joseph Neisen is no longer the Executive Director of the agency. I would appreciate it if you could change the contact information to show me as the primary contact. The listing should appear as Steven M. Harlow, MA, MFT - Clinical Director. If you need something additional please let me know. I can be reached at 415-343-0250. Thank you.
12/03/2007  How can I get a a great LGBTQ program added to your resource list for NJ? Check out www.hitops.org
07/18/2009  My niece, who is 13 and in the 8th grade, lives in Fairfax County, Virginia (just outside Washington, D.C.0 Lately, she has found herself in situations where her classmates make ignorant statements about gay people. She would like to speak out, but it sure what to say or how to say it. Do you have any resources or ideas that I can share with her? Thanks! Michael Schneider Denver, Colorado
10/09/2008  I have looked through the site and all I can find is support for gay people, not surprising, however, I am not gay, and my only gay friends live in different states but that doesn't take away the fact that I would love to show support and help out however I can. If money were no problem I'd donate tons but :( money isn't my strength at this point in life. I'm from Ohio and know there are far too many people out here against gay rights. It would be my honor and privilege if I could do something out here to help stop the hate. (my daughter did participate in the day of silence) Not sure what I could do, I'm hoping you can tell me :) I wear my gay pride shirt :) it has two men, two women, and a male/female all in rainbow colors and I openly share my thoughts in a very peaceful way. thanks and always, best of luck Kathy Pesta
10/12/2007  Im just going through a hard time right now i just dont know what to do and i have nobody to talk to that understands the pain and hurt im felling. Soemtimes i wish i wasnt gay beacuse the abuse is 2 much to take and it hurts so bad. I feel like im the ugliest person in the world. sometimes i just dont know what to do. Sincerly Stacy
10/11/2007  I think that the "Resources" need to be categorized by type of service or at least include information of what service each organization offers and whether they specifically serve the LGBT community. Some youth will be reluctant to contact hetero-cetntric agencies. For example: Ali Forney is listed without any indication of what they do.
10/12/2007  DEAR MRS. SHEPARD..... I AM SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR SON. NO MOTHER AND NO CHILD SHOULD EVER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THAT KIND OF PAIN. MY HEARTS GOES OUT TO YOU. I HAVE A FRIEND NAMED MELANGE LAVONNE. SHE IS A HIP-HOP ARTIST IN CALIFORNIA. YOUR SON INSPIRED HER TO WRITE AND PERFORM A SONG CALLED "GAY BASH". SHE TALKS ABOUT YOUR SON ALL THE TIME AND HOW MUCH IT HURT HER. ALHTOUGH FOR LEGAL REASONS, SHE COULD NOT USE YOUR SON'S NAME AND THE PARENTS IN THE VIDEO CLEARLY DO NOT DEPLICT YOU OR YOUR HUSBAND, AS SHE USES THESE PARENTS AS EXAMPLES OF PARENTS WHO DON'T EXCEPT THERE GAY CHILD. OTHER THAN THAT....IT WAS SOLELY MADE AND RECORDED FOR HER HEART FELT SORROR FOR YOUR SON AND YOUR FAMILY. PLEASE LISTEN TO IT. I THOUGHT IT MAY BE AN EXCELLENT VIDEO TO ADD TO YOUR MEMORIAL PAGE. I KNOW SHE WOULD BE HONORED TO HAVE IT HERE. HERE IS THE LINK TO HER PAGE WHERE THE SONG IS...AGAIN IT'S CALLED "GAY BASH"....IT'S PHENOMINAL!! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=41541711 ALSO IF YOU NEED TO EMAIL HER, HER ADDRESS IS.... MELANGELAVONNE@AOL.COM AGAIN.....MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND I KNOW MATTHEW IS WITH GOD AND SMILING DOWN ON YOU. LOVE, KIMBERLY ROCQUE
10/12/2007  I don't have a question, but I hope this reaches someone. I'm listening to Trivium's album, The Crusade, over my headphones. One song, in particular is about Matthew: And Sadness Will Sear. Every time I hear it, I say a little prayer for him. I was probably in my freshman year of high school when I heard the story about Matthew's traggic end. It stuck through me through college and I has had an impact on my perspective on sexuality and open-mindedness. I may be straight, but no one ever asks me how my sexuality came to be or questions it. Odd what being "differnt" entails. It's so vital to embrace these differences which only really color our personalities and communities. Matthew has left a lasting legacy, I hope you know. On the anniversary of his departure, may you find comfort in knowing that one more person is touched, and one more candle is lit to alight his way.
10/12/2007  Hello, First let me say this is a great thing you do. Please keep it up. I'm the advisor for a new GSA in Montgomery New Jersey. You had a great link 101 way to stop hate in your ...school, home, etc. I can't find it! Please help thanks
10/12/2007  I don't have a question, but I just wanted to say it is nine years since the day that it happened. I was also nine years old. I didn't know much about what happened at the time. But I know now. I cannot imagine the pain you and your family must've suffered and still do. I only wish there were something I could do to help stop things like this from happening. I saw the video of the Laramie Project and will be performing a monologue of one of the actors there to make help make known these atrocities. Today though was the first time I saw a picture of him. And it almost brought me on the verge of tears. And I am not one to cry. I am also a homosexual and I can't imagine this happening to someone like me, but looking at his face, I realize it very well could've been, or could be me. A small gay boy in a small college town. I mentioned his name to all my classes today to make it known in case people might have forgotten. And I want you to know, I am with you. And I am thankful for everything that your son stands for now.
10/12/2007  First I would like to express my deepest sorrow for what happened to Matthew. Even years later I still cry for the senseless harm that occurred to one of my kin. I just wanted to make a website modification... On the Matthew's Legacy section, there is a quote 'There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.' I recognize this as being credited to an American author, Beverly Sills (born 1929). I just wanted to pass this along. Thank you for a really great and extremely well organized online presence.

10/12/2007  Just wanted to send some love to you, and your family of friends. I was checking my email, and my daughters grades online, and I saw that is was a special day for Matthew; the day he was accepted into the kingdom of heaven. My prayers and love is with you and your family. love, Kimmy
10/12/2007  Hello Matthew's Place, My name is Brian, and I'm a 28 year old undergrad from Penn State University. My hometown of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania hosts an annual rally to promote acceptance and equality. Although the rally is not strictly limited to acceptance of homosexuals, it was indeed inspired by the unfortunate murder of Mr. Shepard. The event really made me think about young Mr. Shepard. I don't think I'll ever understand how a twenty-year-old kid could be murdered simply for trying to find out who he is, and live his own life. Brian from PA
10/13/2007  the pathology that was inflicted on your son had fadded from my consciousness until today; i thank you for reminding me. his story is the story of millions, though not always told with such mindless brutality. the photos of him tell another side of what it is to be human: precious.
10/13/2007  I just want you to know. I am a gay Christian. Im a member of a group on the web called Gay Christian Network. Our goal is to help the GLBTQ cummunity overcome religious zealotry and let them know they are valuable and loved by God just as they are. I want you to know. I thank God for you and pray for the light that our dear Matthew Shepards life has sparked in the GLBTQ community through you and, I believe, of Gods design. I want to send my condolences, even now, to Matthew Shepard's family. Even in the sorrow of Matthew Shepard's death. The design God has granted, has become a sign of Love and Hope to the GLBTQ community, given through your Foundation. We were all witness to the religous zealotry that took Matthews life and some of us wish to set the record straight about God's intentions toward His GLBTQ children. Thats message is not one of hate or distain toward His children but one of love and peace for them. You have my prayers and support. With much Love, Sidney T. Whateley IV Member of Gay Christian Network May the peace and love of Christ Jesus be with you! Amen
10/15/2007  Hello. My name is Megan Hernandez and I currently work at a resource center here in New Mexico. I was wondering what would it take it get our information into the GLBT Resouce Center guide? We are one of the few resources New Mexico has and I think it would be highly beneficial to include us. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time. Megan Hernandez Office Assistant Sexual and Gender Diversity Resource Center

10/17/2007  How do we register our organization -- Safe Schools South Florida -- with Matthew's Place? Thanks!
10/17/2007  I was linked to this site by another, which suggested sending messages to the family though THIS site. I have left what I wanted to say as an entry to the guest book. Is that O.K.? I don't mind if anything I wrote is put out there for others to see... but after thinking about what I sent, I guess I should have written that Christian or not, I AM gay... and it is hard for me to face what many people, especially in the church, believe about gay people. There is an ancient creed that states " It is God who hath made us and not we ourselves." I believe that. I don't know why I was made to be gay, but I was. I have to trust that God intended this of me, even if it can be difficult sometimes. I may not be a "youth" anymore, but I care deeply about all of the young people, gay and straight. I may live on the other end of the country, but I have reasons OTHER than being gay to have Matthew's story impact me. My ultra-conservative father attended his first year of college out there in Laramie on a football scholarship. Dad was past 70 before he could even TRY to offer an ounce of acceptance that I'm gay. It was a coded message, as Dad was lying in the ICU of a local hospital. He could not speak because of all of the tubes, but wrote out " Barry is the best nurse I have had." In his mind, we all know each other... but for Dad, this was an effort. I asked if he wanted me to find this person and tell him... Dad nodded... and started trying to fold the page. I understood. He did not want anyone else to see what he had written... that was more than he could handle... to have anyone else in the family see that he had ever spoken well of a man he assumed was gay. I took the page, folded it up and put it in my pocket. That message, out of respect for my father, is long gone. Dad DID finally get better and we have never spoken of that brief encounter again, but he was trying. I will never forget the look in his eyes that night, hoping I still loved him, even as judgmental as he has always been. Dad does not understand me, but needed to know I still loved him... even if I break his rules beyond what he can deal with. And through it all, I know my father loves me too... even if he thinks would have been happier if i had been straight. Harold Harold Warren

04/25/2008  Hello! I am the Director of the Center for Children's Books here at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science in Illinois. I clicked on "Resources" and found no link to Books. So, is this because: 1) the link is down 2) I looking in the wrong place 3) you are in the process of creating a list of good books for the resources section If #3, we would be happy to help you. If you tell us what you are looking for (fiction, nonfiction, etc.) and whether or not you want to limit it in some other way (ie number of books, only books that are in print, only books that are available in paperback, books for specific age groups, etc.) We can provide a list (annotated or not--annotations take a bit longer, of course). In exchange, we would want to be credited with creating the list. I look forward to hearing from you! Sincerely, Christine Jenkins Christine A. 01/06/2008  Dear Sir/Madam, My name is Jonathan Papadopoulos and I am a 17 year old boy from Thessaloniki, Greece. First of all, congratulations for all the work the Matthew Shepard Foundation has already done and will hopefully continue doing. I believe that what you are doing is very important and I hope it will bring the results we all want. I have decided to apply to US Universities for my studies. Not only academic factors have influenced my decision but also social ones. Being gay in Thessaloniki is not very easy as prejudice and sometimes hate is present in the minds of nearly all the people in my city. Therefore I have decided to look for a more understanding environment where my sexuality will not constitute an obstacle in my life. Of course I have not received any answers from the schools that I have applied to and there is the possibility that some or all of the schools will not accept me. Nevertheless, I would be grateful if you could tell me your opinion on some things concerning the schools that I have applied to. My "school list" is: MIT Harvard Johns Hopkins Princeton Dartmouth Williams College Brandeis Do you know how gay friendly these schools are? Are there any figures concerning what percentage of the students of each school identify themselves as LGBT? Have you heard of a school being particularly open minded and accepting? On the other hand, is there any particularly gay unfriendly school in my list? Have you heard of any violent incidents in one of those schools against LGBT people? Thank you very much in advance for your attention. If you think that you do not have the information to answer to such special questions on all of the schools, do you know whether there is someone responsible for consulting LGBT students in choosing a school? Could you give me an email address to contact them? You can reach me by email at : j.ioanathan@gmail.com Yours sincerely, Jonathan Papadopoulos
10/25/2007  Would there be a way to get in touch with Judy Shepard, herself?

10/25/2007  I am a librarian who works with teens in NJ. I recently had a problem with a teen who came out and was kicked out of his home. Fortunately his parents changed their minds after a few days and this young man was able to find someone to take him in for a few days. I am legally not allowed to take a minor to my residence, even under these circumstances, as I jeopardize my job and risk being tried as a pedifile (this is according to my Director).....so I was wondering if there are any organizations or resources that could help in this circumstance should it ever arise again? Thank you very much for your help in this matter and congratulations on the site. It's wonderful and will soon be added to my teen website resources. Saleena Davidson YA Librarian South Brunswick Public Library Monmouth Junction, NJ
10/25/2007  Hello. I am wondering how to get our youth organization listed in your resources section by state. My nonprofit, Rocky Mountain Arts Association has a new youth chorus for glbtqq youth and their straight friends, ages 14 to 20. The chorus is called Mosaic Youth Chorus. We currently have 16 members, and work closely with GLSEN CO and Rainbow Alley at The Center. Thanks, Will Adams 303-367-4799
10/26/2007  It's best to stop this site as the boy is gone and nothing good can come of defending the gay lifestyle. Matt's Mother should cease from carrying this site and let the Lord take care of the killers and bring justice. I feel sorry for his Mother but for her to side with gays is not the way to go. You can't condone sin and that's what she's doing at this time. Sorry for her personal loss of a son but not promoting "gay" agenda.
10/27/2007  Hi, I, wondering what i can do to help. i had a petition signed with over 45 people to sign the petition and I've entered them on the website. What else can i do? What can i do to help? Please let me know. I would like to be involved with all I can. How big or small it is please evolve me. Thank you, Evan Ladeira

10/29/2007  The POLL -- about who to vote for. It needs either a "none of the above" or "al gore" Please add Al -- he may not be running, but he should hear that he's wanted.
10/31/2007  I added a story to the share page today about a hate crime in Hastings, Ne. After discussing it with an attorney, they thought that we should take it off because it is still being investigated. I would like to add it when the investigation is over and charges have been filed and we are in a more definite place. Jonny really wanted me to post it, but out PFLAG attorney said to hold off a little bit. Thank you for your help in taking it off. Also, thank you for the work you do. Sincerely, Vicki
10/31/2007  Dear Mrs. Shepard, I am a gay man. I have been very blessed that i have never been the direct victim of hate. For some reason today, I thought of your son and the pain you have gone through. You are an amazing person and a pillar of truth and love. I am so sorry for you and your family's pain. God loves and Loves Matthew. May your parayers be answered and happiness once again fill your life knowing Matthew is in heaven and smiling down on you for your love and support of him.
11/02/2007  I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent human being. But, where in the Bible does it state that you must judge people for who they are and picket at their funerals to be accepted into Heaven. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the Bible states you shall not judge less ye be judged / He without sin may cast the first stone. My assumption is these people will be first in line to cast that stone, right? I mean, if we wait around long enough after one of their pickets, do you think we'll be able to see each of them walk on water? Point being, I feel a great deal of sadness in my heart for the families and friends of the soldiers out there dying on the line for us and these people ruining their memorial services by picketing at their funerals. It is so sad. Really, sad.
11/04/2007  I was hoping to get permission to use the black and white picture of Matthew to help me with a speech promoting tolerance. Would that be okay? I was also wondering if there was someone I could interview (through email) for the same speech. I would love to speak with anyone who has tolerant views, or even someone who has been through an experience which would help others understand the importance of tolerance. Thank You! Clarissa Archer

11/07/2007  I am becoming more acclimated to e-mail; yes, I am humbled! I have difficulty logging in to take the pole. How can I participate in the pole voting? I do not remember if I have a log in with this site. I have somehow been able to participate with the Presidential question only to date. Thank-you for you committment, service, and pride in your ventures.
11/08/2007  Hi, This may seem like a strange request. I'm a 6th year graduate student in Social Psychology at The University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa). I teach both Intro to Psych and Social Psychology. When I do my section on prejudice and discrimination, I always do a fairly lengthy section on hate crimes and prejudice based on labels. I grew up in Rock Springs Wy. and was still in the state when Matthew was killed. That deeply affected me and I have used Matthew's story to illustrate what labels can do. I try to show a picture of him, and without telling anyone about him or who he is, I ask the class to describe him based on his appearance. Needless to say, I always get positive traits from most of the students. At that point I tell the story and drive home the point about what a label can do to an attitude toward someone. So, to my request. I have tried to use pictures of Matthew that I have downloaded off of this site several years ago, but I cannot get them to a decent size without them becoming fuzzy. In a class of 200 students, the picture has to be put on the overhead projector, typically using Powerpoint. Basically, I am requesting a photo of Matthew for use in my class. However, if you would rather that I not use a photo of Matthew and just tell his story, I understand. It does make the presentation more real for them, and my students typically learn a lot from this section of the class. But, overall, I will respect your wishes if you would prefer me not to. Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Kelly Pivik, M.S. The University of Alabama Psychology Dept. Box 870348 Tuscaloosa, Al. 35487

04/07/2010  Has the organization done any organizing in protest to the Westboro Baptist Church that is taking place across the nation? The church is planning 4 picketing demonstrations in Charleston, WV on Thursday, April 8 and Friday, April 9. The WV Chamber of Commerce is printing and distributing free signs stating "West Virginia is NO place for HATE" to counter the picket demonstrations. These demonstrations are set for 4:20 PM in front of the State Capitol Bldg, at 5PM at the University of Charleston on Thursday; then at 7:15 AM at Charleston Catholic High School and 8:45 AM at the WV Dept. of Education Bldg. on Friday. This group actually went so far as to picket a memorial service in this state when several coal miners were killed in the Sago disaster in January 2006 - saying "God allowed the miners to die because he hates fag-infested West Virginia". I bring this up because we just lost more than 20 miners in a mine explosion on Tuesday and I am sure this group will take full advantage to picket that memorial service to. Just FYI for you - anything you are doing to counter?
11/13/2007  I would like to list our facility as an agency that is safe for homeless LGBTIQ youth. I work as a case manager that specializes in working with these youth, in addition to training our staff and directors to create an inclusive and safe environment for all youth. Please contact me with any questions. I am located in our Colorado Springs home, but we have an equivalent position in our Denver home as well. Check out http://www.urbanpeak.org
11/14/2007  I am a health education teacher in NY and was wondering if there are any movies based on Matthew's life and death that are available to purchase for use in my classroom? If so please forward the title . Thank you for your help with this matter.
11/19/2007  Can I get any info about the person who wrote Matthews info on this site. I needed his life story and I also need the cited information as well. Or can you give me a site (or book) that provides that kind of thing?
11/25/2007  I do not have a question. I just wanted Mrs. and Mrs. shepard to know that I think of matthew often and say a prayer for your whole family every night. thank you
11/27/2007  I am from St. Louis, and was surprised to see that there are no centers/services for GLBT listed. Do you know if there are any available?
11/28/2007  Hi, i know it is almost Matthew's birthday, I am so sorry. The hate needs to stop. I saw the so called church of hate in Westboro on the internet and cannot believe they had any followers. It is quite unerving. What i found really unnerving is what they say about Matt and Judy on their website. I would have it shut down or get a gag order to use your names. When they had freedom of speech it did not mean to hurt others by it. I know it is a bad subject but i was appauld by this. My son is not bi sexual but he is beat up and the police here in town and others put him down as he has gifts not many have. The hate has to stop and our children should live not in fear or riddiculed or killed. I am so sorry this happened to you all god bless, my prayers are with all
11/28/2007  I don't quite have a question, more of a comment. I just watched, on AE, The Matthew Shepard story on American Justice. Last year, my school did the production/play 'Laramie Production' - unfortunatley I didn't go and see it, but watching his story on the TV amazed me; I think that the foundation his parents created is unbelievable. It takes such strength to do what you've done. I have a lesbian friend, and I have such deep respect for her. To think that anyone could committ such a crime is horrific. I will support the Mattew Shepard Foundation for as long as I can; it's such a strong, amazing thing to have done!
11/28/2007  No question, just know that I think of Matthew and his mother Judy often. Greg
11/28/2007  This is not really a question, more of a statement. I saw the Laramie Project today my school was producing it and when the company started performing all I could do was sit there and be completely pulled into what happened. I was so appalled by what Aaron and Russel had done and I can't believe anyone has the guts to do something like that. I was pretty much crying the whole time I was so upset. I can't imagine how you and your husband could of felt when this happened and I am so sorry it had to happen to your son. He seems like he was the greatest and nicest person around. I apologize for all the pain you have to deal with! Sincerely Brittany
11/29/2007  Have you heard about the brand new novel for readers 11 and up, If You Believe in Mermaids ... Don't Tell, one of the few middle-grade novels to address gender diversity? Please alert young people that the novel is free to them on website : believeinmermaids.net. Read advance praise and find ordering information for adults, on the site. Thank you for spreading the word!
11/30/2007  Will you have a MySpace page built? Its a great way to share info! Id love to be on your page!
12/04/2007  Actually I have 2 questions if I may. 1) How do I get ahold of Matthew Matassa for a pic. I would like very much to have one so I can put it up by my front door so every time I go to leave I will remember to be proud of who I am, but also remember I do have to be somewhat careful cause it can happen to me. 2) Also I would like to know where I can find the Laramie Projects. I have not yet to be forunate to have gotten to see it. 3) Does Judy Shepard ever get to Springfield. I would like to met her and tell her that Jesus was put on this earth and died for all of us. So did her son. In a way he died for a reason. He died for all of us. Thank you so much for any help you can give me. Thank you everyone for your hard work, dedication, and compassion for us all.
05/21/2008  The Bradley Playhouse in Putnam Ct is doing the Laramie Project and I would love to know if there are any good ways to help get the word out about our performances I would love to pack the house every night and have as many people as possible hear this story?
12/18/2007  This is actually a letter for Mrs. Shepard and I haven't seen a specific place to send her a message I decided to leave one for her here. Dear Mrs. Shepard, I want to thank you for your persistent effort to educate the world about the effects of hatred and all your work to make this world a better place for all of us to live in. I hope that the recent set backs with the Matthew Shepard Act have not discouraged you. Please know that there are so many of us out there who are cheering you on and sending our best wishes for you and your family. My way of trying to give back to the community has been through art. Inspired by the Laramie project, watching the state of our country and people like you I have collected 28 different people's stories over the past two and a half years and have been intensely studying the dramatic form to create an educational dramatic work that would serve as a way for people to come to understand what it is like to be an LGB American. Trying to make an impact by showing the diversity in a small location I kept the participation focused in a college town in the North Country of New York. Unfortunately in my small corner of the world I was not blessed to work with any local trans gender individuals while conducting the project. As someone who has spent a great deal of time educating individuals about hatred I was wondering if you could share any information about successful ways of reaching people who just didn't have the life experience to understand, or what it is that young LGBT people need to hear to let them know they aren't alone and they are beautiful. Any help you could give would really be appreciated. I wish you the warmest and happiest of holiday seasons, Kyle Parker In case the e-mail contact information didn't carry over, you can reach me at kylejparker@yahoo.com

01/22/2008  RE: Advertising promotions used to promote the showing of "The Matthew Shepard Story" that'd be in my view of things shared off of there when aired to be so sure too, just felt to inappropriately displayed since nearly every single solitary showing of wha'ts been used to promote the airing of it there ended up being mostly just about shows that were to be up and comnig ahead of things out there, which most often apparently ended up being just almost completely all hetero sexually as inclinations toward that end of the world too there which to me felt so inapprorpriate, even though of course, I well realize too there, how difficult that it well equally may have proven to be to find those who would promote such an airing of that show too there, yet even so, appropriateness is another of the more direct or more single soliitary things that perhaps ought to take foremost definition when deciding which of them ought to be used too there, right, my most treasured of all folks there too to be equallly fairly sure above all other things too there, eh, my valued and so treasured friends? marcus monroe 37-a royal crest drive new braunfels texas 78130

01/25/2008  Hello, My name is Sally Adrina Taylor and I am the president of a student organization at Louisiana State University. Please allow me to talk a little before my questions, this will help for clarity of what information I am seeking. The student organization is Gays, Bisexuals, Lesbians, Supporters United (GBLSU) which is a LGBTQ group. I'm embarrassed to say that past members have neglected our website and we are in need of updating the information and the layout as well. I think it is beyond brilliant to have an opening page that allows people to select what color of background they would like the site to have while viewing. My question is about your website and the copyright laws that are enforced on it. Would it be possible to have your permission to adapt an opening similar to yours? We are having trouble selecting what color to have as the background. If we could allow people to choose the color it would do the following: 1) allow people to select a color that is personally more eye pleasing, and 2) would bring many more viewers to our website. Since our group is a LGBTQ group I would like to use rainbow lettering, which is another reason why I would need your permission. I would like to have the front page say GBLSU!, in colors similar to your own colored boxes. Could we have permission to do so? I know that I am asking a lot, but the idea would not occurred if your organization hadn't created a strong impression on me. I sincerely hope you consider my request. I hold Matthew's Place in high regard for its clever ideas, tech savvy flow of the design, and vast information on LGBTQ issues. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sally Adrina Taylor GBLSU President-LSU http://www.lsu.edu/student_organizations/gblsu/
01/29/2008  Probably just tired, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to register.
01/31/2008  Hi. My name is MacKenzie and I am acutally performing in the Laramie Project at my school this spring and I just have a few questions for you if that is okay. 1. What message do you want the play to send out to people? 2. What do you say to those who don't support the play or what you have done with Matthew's story? 3. In one word can you describe Matthew's life? 4. What did Matthew do not only in his life but also in his death to help change the way people view others? 5. Would there be any chance that one of your reps could come out to Minnesota to talk with the cast or see the show? Performances are March 13,14,15 at 7 pm. Just a thought on this one, I know you must be crazy busy. If you can answer these questions that would be great. Thank you. Thank you for not giving up the fight. I believe Matthew lives in a little bit of all of us and you made that possible. God bless.
01/31/2008  Some friends and I were talking the other day and we were wondering why the Westboro Church is allowed to demonstrate at funerals and other similiar events. They certainly have it in for Matthew, but at least they have a link to your site -- which I find amusing. Thanks
02/05/2008  hello, i am doing a class on hate crimes and i would love to get a copy of matthew's story, how can i buy one? can you please help me.
02/06/2008  My honors acting class is putting on The Laramie Project for the state competition we participate in andwe were wondering if there are any peices of writing or documetation of speakings that Matthew had done before he was killed. If there is, is there any way that we could be able to access or look at it so that we can better understand who he was.

02/09/2008  Hi Mrs. Shepard, I saw & listened to you on C-SPAN on 2/9/08. I'm not gay and in my walk through life I turned to many things trying to learn that God simply Loved me. In one part of my life I actually played guitar with the "Jimmy Swaggert Ministries" in 86-89 and obviously the belief was that Gay was a sin. One day early in the morning I went to the very large sanctuary and asked God to make me what ever I needed to be. Very shortly after that, I became addicted to pills then street drugs, I was divorced and homeless, with a criminal record, living back in CT where I was raised and lived all my life, with the exception of the three years in Baton Rouge, LA...I was humbled, I was broken, I was rejected, and had come to the end of all my judgements, beliefs, and excuses...then God was free to come in. Now, after working in the recovery field for several years, I'm putting an agency together to provide help to those who are where I was...and the scripture that Christianity uses against Gays did not say that when I looked it up in the original Greek language, which the NT was written, and sins are interpreted as mistakes, and the one purpose Jesus came and the one message he brought was that the good news is "God Loves Us" and if you truly believe that you are in the Kingdom of Heaven...we just, as a people have always believed we were not loved by God...and your talk and the manner in which you spoke echoed that message...we are all loved...the only ones that say otherwise, are those who purport to speak for God, which in turn produce people like those who took this life away from Mathew...you are helping many people, even those outside of Gay rights and you have my highest respect and as Jesus was put to death by hateful people to save others, Mathew died in the same manner by the same people...and his death is saving many others as well...sorry for rambling...I just wanted you to know that you blessed one man, on one night, and am better for it. God Bless You, Ron DeJohn
02/11/2008  Last night on C-Span I watched a speeck given by Judy Shepard in Deland, Florida. The program was called American Perspective and the title of the speech was" Fighting Gay Discrimination." I am the Laison for the United Methodist Church in Junction City, OR for the reconcilliation movement in our church. I would very much like to buy a copy( dvd/vhs) of that speech for a Sunday Class and as a library resource for our church. 02/13/2008  hi there. if i would write an e-mail to matthew's mother, would you be able to forward it to her? you can read it of course before forwarding it. thanks
02/18/2008  Hi My names Nathan Boyle, im from Australia, I was just wondering what happened to the content of the original matthews place website, has it been removed for legal reasons or other reasons? the only reason i ask this is becasue when i was getting bashed at high school and new that i had no support from my family i was told about this website and visited it almost every day, i took strength from matthews story and the amazing support of his family, i loved the speech to the court section and the other sections, they may still exist on this website i just cant find them,
02/21/2008  In all honesty i dont have a question i just wanted to say that when i first saw the matthew shepard story and the trumen project it made me realize that something needed to be done to help the GLBTQ world and well i guess i do have a question after all. At my school we have a GSA and i was wondering how we could go about getting the erase hate tshirts?
02/27/2008  10 year anniv. in Oct...What is being planned, Washington?...How can I be of service and/oro help?
03/04/2008  I am the Entertainment Manager of a G.LB.T Restaurant in Vancouver Canada. We are interested in bringing Mrs. Shepard in for a charity dinner. How do I go about that?
03/03/2008  Dear Mr. And Mrs Shepard, I do not have a question, however I do want to express my sadness in the loss of your son. In reading of the things Matthew was doing , I can't help but think how much we , as a people lost along with you. It seems to me that if he had the oppertunity to have gotton into politics - he may have been a great force in aiding others regardless of where they lived in this world ;even if it was behind the curtain. As an Air Force Veteran it saddens and disturbs me that there are those who wrecklessly misuse their freedoms because of their personal fears or hate. As I occassionaly have the oppertunity to tell others - That child or young person , neighbor or somewhere in a third world country may have the next maedical break-through,music,art or just being in the right place at the right time for one of these gifted people and help keep them out of harms way - - -but because we as indivuals choose to look the other way and ignore their plight - -they are no longer with us,and we all lose the Gift they had to share. I never met Matthew ; however I think I would have been blest to have had the privilage of his smile , personality ,insights to his viewvpoint of the world , or simply just being himself. When our time here on earth is done , I hope that I may meet with you and Matthew - -for you are a light of love and hope in this world that at times seems to have lost its way. I close with this simple prayer that God may Bless and keep you and yours Safe , and Blest when you go out and when you come in . .And that the Peace and Light of God and His understanding abide with you always. Respectfully and Sincerly , Doug Gerhardt
03/03/2008  First of all, I'm not exactly sure if this query is properly directed. If not, I would very much appreciate its redirection to the appropriate party. ~ My name is Jeremy Herring. I was ten years old when Matthew Shepard was killed. I cried, not because I understood, but because I knew it was awful and wrong. Because I could feel that sadness resonate in those around me. Now, at nineteen, his story resonates within me. I don't think it matters that I'm bisexual; my emotions and convictions in this matter do not at all stem from sexual orientation. They come from a dedication to love, peace and an absence of hate. I've been playing instruments, singing and writing songs for the better part of my life. I've had an idea for years, but never felt I was mature enough or strong enough to do it. Until now. I've begun writing a song dedicated to Matthew. It will be called 'Shepard's Song.' This is something that I've wanted to do for a long time, and it's very important to me. First, I want to make sure that this will in no way offend or bother anyone in Matthew's family or anyone in this organization. I'm not sure why it would, but I need to ask. Secondly, I would like to place this song as a track on my debut album (recording in progress), entitled 'Painting Peace.' I have recently achieved some commercial success, though I've no idea how my album might fare upon its release. Please believe me: profit is in no way, not even some tiny amount, my goal or inspiration in writing this song. I want to write it because it means a lot to me, and because (if I can do it justice) I want people to hear it. Putting it on record seems the most widely spread way to do that. However, if/when the album receives any success or acclaim, then technically this song may be being 'sold' in my name. Once again, please believe that I don't want to 'sell' this song, it just seems the best way to get it to people (also, perhaps it would be possible to donate any profits from the song to the Foundation or to another likeminded charity?). So my second question is, is this acceptable? If so (as I do hope), are there also any copyright issues that would need to be considered? Thirdly and most importantly: I do not think I can do this alone. I've been reading about Matthew for a long time, and I've always been for love and peace, for erasing hate. But.. I never knew him. No matter how many pictures I see or stories I read, I never knew Matthew. If it were possible, some contact with someone or some people (even a member of his family, if that's feasible in any way) that did I think would help me a great deal in making this piece of art more genuine, more authentic. A truer celebration of Matthew's beauty, and the legacy he's left. I'm sure these people are very busy; even an email or two would be of incalculable benefit. I know I'm not entitled to any of their time, but if anyone finds this idea touching or wants to help, I would be in their debt. I want this to be real. Thank you for your time. Most sincerely, Jeremy Herring
03/09/2008  Hi There, I am adding a profile of Matthew to the http://gayteens.about.com website and was wondering if you had a picture of him I could use? If so that would be great. Let me know if you have any questions. Best, Ellen http://gayteens.about.com gayteens.guide@about.com
03/11/2008  My husband had the pleasure of having a meeting with Matthews father day before yesterday. Who would have thought coming all the way to Saudi Arabia and meeting Matthews father. Good Bless you all. The Harts
03/12/2008  Hello Mr. and Mrs. Shepard. My Name is Martin Corso, I have 22 years old and I am from Argentina, South America. I know this will be just one more letter of all the Emails you receive per day, per hour or per minute. But i wanted to express my admire and respect to you and your beloved ones for how you behaved showing to the world love and peace instead of hate and death. I want to express how sorry I am for Matthew and Im sure he was meant to change this world, because he had. He changed the world of all of us, gay or straight people. You help to promote peace on a daily bases and I am proud of it. I am working now days in Doha, Qatar (an Arabic Country in the middle east next to saudi) as a cabin crew for Qatar Airways, the local airline. Im living one of the dreams of my life which is to see the world and learn from different people, cultures and situations. Learn new sensations, discover new aromas, new people, new folklore. Im learning as well that we are all different, wether you live in wyoming, in doha, in buenos aires, or in Qatar. I think that difference make us unique. Matthew was different. Matthew was unique. Unique cause as I said before he changed everyones world and he never chose to be just another one who goes behind of what life dictates, but he fought for his dreams of acceptance and to live his sexuality as free and happily as possible. Im sure he did. Im a gay boy and I know how's that fear of not being accepted, or watching at your parents thinking that they don' t really know who you are, how you feel, or the living hell you're going through. Luckily i had the opportunity as matthew had of telling my parents about my sexuality and I am still enjoying letting them know about how I feel and which my truly dreams are. The other dream that I'd like to fight for is to live happy and have peace. To be happy and be able to create my family one day with some one, and have the chance to adopt a kid and be able to make the difference. Be able to teach this new soul, instructions of love and peace. Of respect and tolerance. To celebrate our differences and learn from him just like you learnt from matthew or mom and dad learn from me. I believe that we, the gay people, have the right to get married, live a peaceful life, have a medical insurance, be able to buy a home and as well adopt a kid. Why aren't we deservers of this happiness and style living? Because we choose some one of our own sex to spend the rest of our lives with? I guess that's not fair. But many things are not fair and one of those things are not having matthew among us. I don't know you personally, but with your daily job of promoting peace and tolerance I know you do think like me and I am sure something like that was Matthew's dream as well. I make my effort every day to promote love and acceptance, but I try to do it avoiding fear. Fear to the unknown. Fear. what a horrible word. It doesn't sound good at all. Once a friend told me that it is better to do anything fearless and to do a mistake instead of staying there paralyzed by fear. You know why...? Because we humans learn more from mistakes that from doing the right thing. If we do not learn our lesson, Im sure life will put the same situation over an over again in front of us to give us the chance to grow and become better people. That is why I admire you as well so much. Cause you acted fearless and you could see the light among the darkness your life were sinked into. As I said before, I live in Doha, Qatar which is a muslim country, and homophobia is everywhere. I guess the clue is to understand things as they are. To try to understand why they are like that and see if we can change it. If you study the Islam and go deeper on the muslim religion you'll understand the reason of this fear, of this behavior.. I still choose to live here cause i respect difference and i know that if I respect difference they will respect me. I need to stay here cause it is an opportunity to learn, see the world, become a better person, and save some money for my future home. I choose being here cause I want a better world, cause I believe in a better world and i want to be part of it. That's why i dream to create a family and be happy with a housebound and a child. Matthew's case helped to see the world that hate promotes more hate and helped me to understand how thankful I should be, for being alive and choosing how to act every day. It helped me to decide to keep fighting and this is a peaceful fight for acceptance and tolerance. This is a peaceful fight so anyone in the world will never forget what happened to Matthew, and so this will never happen again. If you are around the middle east, I would be delight to show you around Qatar, or Buenos Aires one day back in Argentina if you choose going there. Buenos Aires, the Argentinean capital, is becoming a nice place for gay people because of it acceptance fortunately. Off course that there is homophobia and discrimination but where isn't...?. I just saw the NBC a special about the Matthew shepard case and I felt like writing this words to you. I don't know if this words will reach you but it is worth to try. Matthew will always be in my heart and i will always remember him as a heroe cause he fought for what he wanted. As well as you who helped us, gay and straight people, to live in a better world every day. Thank you. I am at your service for what ever you need. Best Regards and Appreciation, Martin Andres Corso. 03/21/2008  I am in the military and I am gay, I was at the SLDN dinner and found out that Judy Sheppard was speaking there. Judy Sheppard is one of the few unique people who has helped me out through out life and it has been a major goal to thank her. I was wondering if their was a schedule with any of her dates and locations she will be speaking at. I came close to being able to say hi to her and missed her... It really would mean a lot to thank her in person and I wanted to see if she would be traveling close to maryland any time soon. Thank you.

04/01/2008  Dear Friends at Mathew's Place. My name is Suzanne Greenfield and I am the safe schools coordinator at the National office of PFLAG. 04/02/2008  We are producing The Laramie Project in Denver, and with your permission, we'd like to use a photo of Matthew in memorium as a final image in the play. Especially in light of the ten year anniversary of Matthew's death, we thought it particularly important to remind the audience that he is a real person. Is there an image that you would prefer us to use? Please let me know as soon as you are able. Thank you so very much.
04/21/2008  How do i get involved in the Matthew Shepard Foundation. I would realy realy like to be apart of making a diffrence for each and every indivigual. 214-536-0121
04/06/2008  Hello, Firstly I'd like to say, along with thousands of others I'm sure, how much I admire the Shepard family and friends etc for conducting this marvellous work. I am a drama student and will be participating in a production of The Laramie Project this May, with The City Literary Institute, which is a College based in Covent Garden, London. I would be very interested in obtaining as much resource material as possible and have noticed that a resource toolkit is being compiled. I would be very grateful for any information you could provide, as both myself and the members of the company want to do justice to this play: I know this is short notice but I've only recently stumbled onto this website. I would also like to know if it would be possible to obtain permission to promote The Matthew Shepard Foundation and the Erase Hate Campaign in our theatre programme? Many thanks for your time; kind regards and best wishes for the future. Natalie Webb
04/11/2008  I attended The Laramie Project in Denver last evening - it was a powerful show - and it reminded me that Judy Shepard spoke at Hewlett-Packard in Fort Collins 2-3 years ago. I missed that session but I understand there might be a recording available somewhere. Can you help me find that recording? Or tell me where I can hear Judy speak? Thank you.
04/15/2008  Could you please tell me how to buy an "erase hate" necklace/pendant" like the one shown in the USA Today article on March 11, 2008. Thank you and bless your work, Frank McNair
04/16/2008  Hi, I'm managing editor for the Bloomington, IL, Pantagraph (the local daily newspaper) and am working with the McLean County Diversity Project. The project brings together young people and adults from various cultures and backgrounds so both can learn from the other. Next May, the Project is hosting a production of The Laramie Project as an outgrowth of a GBLT study the students are working on this year. The Project director, Downs Mayor Jeff Schwartz, has asked me to contact you to see if Mrs. Shepard would be willing to attend the performance and speak with the Project students. She's visited Bloomington-Normal several times in the past few years. Please contact me at the email address above and I can provide further information. The Project would cover transportation and lodging costs for Mrs. Shepard. Thank you in advance for your consideration and for all you do. -Julie Gerke

05/01/2008  hi my name is Josh Hobart i am gay and i grew up in a town much smaller if not the same size as Laramie. However because of Matthew's story and the play about his story (The Laramie Project). I was able to grow up with minimal harassment possible. Even though i did go through harassment but if i was to go through the things that Matthew went through i believe that i to wouldn't be here. Also in a way he has saved my life because my senior year of high school i had been harassed by a bunch of freshmen football players because i was the first and only gay person to ever go to my school and on the anniversary of the day Matthew was taken from this world . We had a "Matthew Shepard day" at my school. Which that Friday i went to the homecoming football game. which after the game i went to a party with a bunch of friends that were cheerleaders. The freshman that had been harassing were at the party. They came up to me and just started apologizing to me for the harassment. So they wanted to go for a walk with me to get to know me better. or at least i thought so we went for a walk in the cornfield that was in the back yard of the house. When on are way back into the house they stopped me and told me that they planed on drenching me with fuel and lighting me on fire, but after they watched the video that the school had us watch about Matthew they changed. so in a way Matthew was looking out for me a stranger he had never met before in his life. So i would like to thank the whole Shepard family for sharing everything they did with the public, and i want to thank Matthew for he is the angel that has been looking out for me.
07/03/2008  Is there a way to contact judy shepard or logan shepard and e mail them asking one of them to speak at a gay pride event in 2009? and is t here a way to join the foundation and matthews place as a leader/ helper
05/06/2008  RE: Gay Marriage Licenses in Miami, Florida. I, am running for Clerk of the Circuit Court of Miami Dade County Florida. I am also a strong supporter of gay rights. In fact I have filed judicial complaints against powerful Judges who have attended and spoken at so called "Christian Coalition" events that advance hate against Gays. See the following news links for details: http://www.dailybusinessreview.com/Web_Public_Stories/Rothenberg_JQC_Complaint.html http://www.operationrestorejustice.com/Election%20Info%20Nov%207%202006.htm The detailed complaint is here: http://www.operationrestorejustice.com/Rothenberg%20BW%20JQC%20Complaint%20Oct%2029%202006%20with%20exhibits.pdf Dear, Friend, I, need your help in informing the gay community and others that Darrin E. McGillis is running as a Democrat for the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court. The Clerk of Court issues marriage licenses to the people of Miami-Dade County Florida. I want to be the first Clerk of Court of any County in Florida that says his constitutional duties mandate that all persons be entitled to a marriage license. I want to take legal action after I am elected to fight for the right that the office of Clerk of Court cannot discriminate nor will it discriminate against gay couples that want and request a marriage license. My Campaign web site is: www.mcgillis4clerk.com This will surely be a hot topic but as you can see from the news clips above I am ready for the fight against discrimination. Sadly, I will not be on the August 26, 2008, ballot unless we can get at least 20 people to give ($500.00) each to the Campaign. This will cover the filing fee that will be due in June. If our Campaign does not raise the almost ($11,000.00) filing fee we will not be able to take legal action against the State of Florida to mandate my obligations as the new Clerk of the Circuit Court constitutionally demands I be allowed to issue marriage licenses without regards to sexual orientation. Please pass this message on to only people that you know what to make same sex marriage a reality. Hate is NOT a family value! Warm. Personal regards, Darrin E. McGillis, Democrat for Clerk of the Circuit Court Miami, Dade County, Florida Ps. Check out my music company World Wide Entertainment at www.mcgillismu
07/14/2008  I don't have an actual qurstion, but I really wanted to thank you for this wonderful website. It's really helped me, as a person, a lot, and I really wanted to thank you for that. I also wanted to know if there are any materials I could use as part of an Erase Hate campaign at my school this next year.
01/08/2010  To Whom It Concerns, I hold Matthew and Judy Shepard very close to my heart. I visit the websites daily and do all I can to support the cause. I am disabled, but try to condtribute in any way I can. I bought Judy's book and it is signed. I love it, I cherish it. I am having a problem - I can get to this page, but cannot get to www.MathewsPlace.com. When I try to go to MatthewsPlace I am automatically directed to this site. I cannot get to MatthewsPlace, and I saved enough to buy the necklace. I have tried countless times over the past several days, and I am wondering why I can't get to that page. Also, I use Myspace and there are two Matthew Shepard profies. I use both and visit them daily as well. I want to ask if the Myspace profiles are genuine and part of MatthewShepard.org. I have the bookmark in front of me. On it there are two sites: www.MatthewShepard.org, and www.MatthewsPlace.com. When I try to go to either of those I end up on this page. I am asking for your help, so that I can help the organization. If you find time I would appreciate if you can instruct me on what I may be doing wrong. Sincerely, Joseph Rospetti rosbury2@hotmail.com or jrospetti@yahoo.com
05/13/2008  I saw Judy on CBS News on Logo and was interested to learn that your foundation gives funds to organizations that educate about LGBT issues. Can you tell me where to locate a grant application and submission guidelines? Sincerely, Sheela Lambert

05/22/2008  Dear Sir/ Madam, In from Thanksgiving 2008 through to Independence Day 2009 I will be travelling through every state in the USA for a book. The point of the book is to emphasize to both Americans and non Americans the many positive aspects of the country at a time when internationally the country's reputation has ebbed to a low. I was drawn to your site in search of the location of the terrible tragedy that was the attack upon Matthew Shephard. I note that you avoid specific reference to the place where Matthew was attacked. Since by my understanding it is on private land I can well understand the reason for this. Though I have no intention of trespassing on private property I wonder if you would tell me the nearest publicly accessible point to the site, since I would very much like to include a visit in the text of my book. I mean to include details of Matthew's story by way of balancing the book with both positive and negative aspects of the modern day USA. As a gay man I have particular interest in Matthew's story. I hope very much to hear from you. With my very best wishes and apologies for asking what I'm sure is a question you are asked frequently. Laurence Watts
05/26/2008  Not really a question, more of a statement. I will never forget. I think it is sad that people have forgotten the magnitude of your loss and how important this tragedy was to the gay community. I do not want others to ever forget who Matthew was. God bless you all.
09/11/2008  I was wondering,if i could get a letter size of your erase hate sign with your web site on it sent to me, would like to print off some copies and hang them in my home town, since another year mark is comming up for Matt.
06/08/2008  Just wanted to point out what seems like a bug on the website. It seems like the "Accept email" and "Accept mail" check boxes are reversed when accessing the user settings from Matthew's Place (as opposed to going in through matthewshepard.org). If I edit the settings from Matthew's Place, so that "Accept email" is checked and "Accept mail" is not, and save them then go back to edit them the "Accept email" becomes unchecked and "Accept mail" becomes checked. Thanks!! -Donald
06/09/2008  I don't really have a question...I just wanted to say that this is a wounderful thing you guys are doing. I heard about this when I was watching the movie on Lifetime. I hated how someone could do that to another human. No matter if they are homeless, poor, gay,or has anthing else wrong with them. I hate people like that. Rebecca Stickler

06/03/2009  I am sickened by the following article. I have been writing their advertisers and stating. This needs to be dealt with. KRXQ Sacramento Radio Hosts Encourage Abuse Against Transgender Children Even by the flexible moral, ethical, and professional standards of American talk radio, the May 28th segment of KRXQ 98.5 FM Sacramento's Rob, Arnie, & Dawn in the Morning radio talk show makes for a sickening half-hour of ugliness and cruelty. For once, the focus was not LGBT adults, but minors. The hosts, Rob Williams and Arnie States, devoted the segment in question to a vicious diatribe against transgender children, some as young as five, focusing in particular on the case of one Omaha family raising a gender dysphoric child, and their decision to support her transition from male to female.
07/01/2009  I moved to Fort Collins, Co in 2007. I married a former State Representitive who is very much in the closet. I have not been able to make any friends because of the hush, hush status. My wife travels a minimum of 2 weeks a month to do leadership consulting. My question is, how can I become more active in helping the LGBT community. I don't work and I have a lot of time on my hands. I feel that now, this time in my life, I should be helping and trying to make a difference in peoples lives. Please let me know if I can be of assistance in anyway. I would love to volunteer my time to make sure that what happened to Matthew NEVER happens again.
08/13/2008  Hi, I had written earlier to see if Judy and/or Dennis would like to participate in our "Words of Wisdom" project of the Casper Journal and Casper Star-Tribune. "Words of Wisdom" is published every Wednesday in the Casper Journal, and we are hoping that we could get your comments for the Oct. 8 edition, which of course is near the 10th anniversary since Matthew's death. We know that Judy is a speaker across the country on anti-hate crimes, etc. and would love to share her wisdom with the younger generations on how to live their lives from the perspective of what you, as parents, have gone through. Thank you for your time. I can e-mail some of the Words of Wisdom that have been published.' Thank you, Wyoma Groenenberg Associate Editor Casper Journal 210 S. 07/23/2008  For Matthew's mother. I have just had a horrific experience with the Wyoming Courts in a simialr incident to Matthew's. My relative's death was expedited by some of Wyoming's lawyers. I hired Steve Aron to help, but I was outgunned. I know that Rerushka (sp?) has moved on, but have you run across one honest Wyoming lawyer that you might suggest I contact? Did you run across one decent journalist that sought the truth? I would be most grateful if we could talk, briefly, as I know you schedule is hectic. Thank you.
07/24/2008  I don't have a questionI just wanted to say to Matthews mom.How sorry I am that a horrible thing happened to her son.I just saw the movie on T.V and never knew about it until now.I cried through out the whole movie wondering how some one could do this. I know its been 10 years since this happened but to me it was like it happened yesterday.I wish I could have known him.I'm 31 and live in NC and I know that he went to school here for a while.Know that he is in gods hands and will see you soon with open arms.To his dad I would like to say you were the best father you could be alot of people don't even know their fathers. You are doing a good thing and keep up the good work.I promise i will never forget Matthew Shepard.Love Jennifer Maxam 252-838-1089 call any time I would love to hear from you. Thanks
07/24/2008  Hi Judy, I write you every so often and think of Matt and your family often. His show is on again, so I started thinking of you. ..The last time I wrote I had buried one of Matt's biggest supporters, Gentle Touch.. (Maureen O'Brien). I truly hope this finds you well. Having been born in Casper and raised in Wyoming this has always touched me extra deeply. God Bless .. Lorretta W
07/25/2008  I don't have a question, just a hello. I live in Georgia and should be back in Atlanta at the beginning of August. I just finished a year in jail and also have finished 8 years of recreational drug use, and now I have to fight to survive by finding a job, place to live and to fight HIV as well; I am still having legal problems which is affecting my VA disability. All of these things that I am dealing with will come to pass as I look to God for guidance, plus, as a whole, I am pretty happy with my life-because I am alive. I would like to receive information from this organization on how to help YOU all by getting the word out to the Gay family in Atlanta. My birthday this year will coincide with Matthews untimely meeting with evil (the 10th Anniversary) and I plan to remember him when I celebrate my birthday. I am originally from Aurora, Colorado; graduated from Hinkley High School; came out to a young mens group which was located near Cheeseman Park in Denver; use to go to the Metro and Paradise Garage. In 1992, I was part of the fight against Amendment No.2 and in 1998, I was back home when Outfront issued their commemorative issue to Matthew. Wow, my nephews name is Matthew to!!! I have a lot to be thankful for today and I hope that I can still help to make a difference for those who are having problems with "who they are." I am using God to help me out with my life and hope that I can make a difference with others with God as part of that; to have God in your life is such great power that I have defeated evil every time in the past 18 months. I would love to share more of my story when the time presents itself, but for now, I hope to be a part of your foundation because it is worth it!! No matter what my struggles will be, I hope to find the time to do this and help others along the way. Thank you!
07/26/2008  My partner and I will be passing thru Laramie on or around Sept 20/21. May I please have directions to Matthew's memorial site outside of Laramie? Thank you
07/30/2008  This is the letter to the editor of my local newspaper. Yesterday I was listening to the radio, and they were talking about The Laramie Project at The Matchbox, and the "Christian" group from Kansas that is going to be picketing it. Their website is "God Hates Fags", and it just gets worse from there. They claim to preach the word of God in peaceful protest, but they seem to be filled with hate instead of love for their fellowman. I believe that they, as a group are breaking the third commandment of "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain". By using God as the reasoning to spread hate, they are taking what the bible teaches and twisting it to their own wants and specifications. They are using God's name in vain. They are also celebrating the murder of one man, whose life to them is worthless, and to so many others, worth the world. Matthew Shepard's life has been the basis in many hate crime laws in the U.S.A. and rightfully so. Now I realize that not everyone agrees with their fellowman's right and freedom to be homosexual, or my right to support them, but crossing international boarders to protest our people's lifestyles and the life of one man who was brutally murdered is so disrespectful. They are trying desperately to push their views and beliefs on people who couldn't care less what they think. It makes me sick to my stomach to think that we as a world constantly think that we are making progress to love one another for all of our differences and similarities and one of these groups comes out of the woodwork and you can see that we truly haven't made much progress at all. Their thoughts on the Laramie Project are and I quote "The Laramie Project is a tacky bit of filthy sodomite propaganda, with no literary merit and zero redeeming social value, masquerading as a bona fide play", and that because Matthew Shepard is in "Hell" nothing about his life is relevant anymore. To this I must reply, that if his life and his story is worth so little, why bother even involving yourself in it? These people are so confused about what a real problem is and could really put themselves to good use protesting real issues like the mistreatment of the Tibetan people and not plays in Red Deer. That there are still groups out there that "preach the word of God" and can push so much hate towards their fellowman, a person that could be their son or daughter, their best friend, their parents and that they could ostracize them or celebrate their brutal murder shocks and shames me that I have to call myself human as well as these people. I cannot believe that audacity of the Westboro Baptist Church, and you can bet that I will be at the Laramie Project at the Matchbox Theatre to show my support for Matthew Shepard's story.
08/05/2008  Hello there, Three weeks ago I e-mailed Matthew Matassa (and then Logan Shepard) for pictures of Matthew Shepard, but I haven't got an answer yet. I'm a singer/songwriter from the Netherlands and on my band's next album will be a beautiful song (if I may say so myself) about Matthew Shepard, called 'Poster Child'. I would like to use some of his pictures for our website to tell his story and link to the Matthew Shepard Foundation. I hope to hear from you. Bye, Marinus de Goederen P.S. You can watch my band's first video through this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZYi2s75UHY.
08/15/2008  I am a graduate student at the University of Denver (DU). I am 35 and am from Bozeman, Montana. I talked with a few folks in Bozeman and they suggested I email you. I am willing to write a proposal for Montana and Wyoming and present via the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's annual conference Creating Change that will be in Denver for the first time ever on January 28 - February 1st, 2009. Proposals have to be in by September 30th, 2008. A person close to me said that Montana does not cover Gays (I am not sure about the LBGTQ) under the hate crime laws. I am unsure of this policy/law and will research it. My question to you -- is there anything that you would want me to propose at the conference. Also, a person close to me said you get a lot of hate mail and that the mother has a stalker. I realize you know nothing about me. So, feel free to call me or emai me at rachel_l_henderson@yahoo.com --- if you would like my university email feel free to ask. I really amn interested in protecting people I love and people that I do not yet know. PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK. I AM NOT REALLY SURE WHERE TO START WITH A PROPOSAL AND THINK YOU WOULD HAVE SOME EXPERT ADVICE ON HOW TO EFFECT CHANGE. ----- oh, on a side note, I have done some policy work and testified in front of legislators regarding the reform of welfare, on behalf of women in Helena, MT 2001. I may still have contacts with regard to influencing politicians, but I am not totally sure. Thanks for offering a way to contact you and below is an email everyone received at DU. That means more than 2,000 LGBTQ people and allies will be here in Colorado for 5 days attending workshops, sharing information, and gaining new skills, among other things. I'm on the conference's Program Committee and want to make sure that we have a good representation of the progressive work that social workers are doing here in Colorado. I was hoping you might consider submitting a proposal if any of your work falls within the scope of the conference. The deadline is Sept 30th and all the info you need to submit is below in this email. Staff members at NGLTF will be reviewing the proposals and making the decisions on which proposals are accepted, however, we do know a few things about what they are looking for and wanted to share that with you. If you have any questions about the process at all or if you want some advice on your proposal, please don't hesitate to call me. The Program Committee will also be conducting web-inars and live seminars in the next few weeks for folks with questions about proposal submissions, so let me know if you want me to inform you when the final schedule for those come out. Again, we really hope to see a lot of proposals reflecting the amazing work that social workers are doing for such a compelling national conference. Peace, Eugene Walls 303-871-4367 Essential Tips and Best Practices for Workshop Proposal Follow the Instructions! It seems basic; however NGLTF needs a lot of information in a number of formats for each application. Read the instructions and refer back to them in order to make sure we get a complete and comprehensive application for your workshop. Be Objective. Applicants have the opportunity to select the workshop format and skill level. Clear and Concise is your best friend. Be as objective as possible when selecting. Make sure your session outline supports the session format time requested and the level. Set Yourself Apart ! Make it Fun! Be creative! Catchy titles and descriptions are essential to the success of your application and your workshop. The titles and the descriptions requested are for publication in the conference catalog and should reflect the main focus of your workshop. Clarity in the "Abstract". You are to provide a 150-200 word abstract on your proposed workshop. This will not be published and is your BEST opportunity to "SELL" the selection committee on your proposal. Often the abstract gets confused or combined with the session outline. The main purpose of the abstract is to define how your workshop fulfils the mission of the Creating Change Conference. National Gay and Lesbian Task Force now accepting session proposals for The 21st National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change WASHINGTON, July 16 -- The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is now accepting session proposals for The 21st National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change. The Creating Change Conference celebrates 21 years of building the political power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) movement for social justice in Denver, Colo., on Jan. 28 Feb. 1, 2009. More than 2,000 activists and organizers will attend this unique annual gathering, the LGBT movement's premier skills-building and strategy conference. Online proposal submission and complete information can be found at www.creatingchange.org. The deadline for proposals is Sept. 30, 2008; notifications about scheduling will begin in early November. Conference presenters receive a discounted registration fee. Proposals on all topics of interest to LGBT movement leaders are welcome, from sessions that grapple with pressing immediate issues like the results of the 2008 elections or how the right-wing attacks on LGBT families can be countered. Longer-term issues such as the impact of the AIDS epidemic, especially in communities of color, or how to build multiracial advocacy organizations in communities are also on the Creating Change agenda. Session proposals that present the lessons learned and best practices involving all aspects of LGBT organization management and political advocacy are especially encouraged. A complete set of proposal guidelines and a sample session proposal are online at www.creatingchange.org. A significant portion of the Creating Change Conference program is planned and presented by movement heroes from around the country. Attendees at Creating Change include colleagues who are young and old; organizers and activists of color; volunteers and staff people at LGBT organizations; LGBT advocates and straight allies; and leaders of campus communities. Creating Change attracts people from every corner of the United States who are working to build the LGBT movement's political power from the ground up. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. We do this by training activists, equipping state and local organizations with the skills needed to organize broad-based campaigns to defeat anti-LGBT referenda and advance pro-LGBT legislation, and building the organizational capacity of our movement. Our Policy Institute, the movement's premier think tank, provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality and to counter right-wing lies. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a nation that respects the diversity of human expression and identity and creates opportunity for all. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., we also have offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis and Cambridge. © 2008 National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. 1325 Massachusetts Ave NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20005. 08/20/2008  Good morning, I work for the local government and each year I organise Holocaust Memorial Day. In the UK this year's theme is 'Stop The Hatred'. I am an out lesbian officer as well and I take hate crime reports from the public. In order to promote the under reporting of hate crimes, my idea this year is to have a panel which consists of holocaust survivor; a traveller who has been ousted of Romania because of his culture; I am trying to get Doreen Lawrence, the mother of Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in the 90s and led to the Macpherson Report here in the UK. I am also trying to get relatives of an LGBT murdered person and am trying to contact Jody Dobrowski's family. I know it's really strange and far fetched but I thought you might have a contact for her as I simply can't get one here in the UK. I would be very grateful for any help you could give, even if you have contacts for other people who have relatives that have either been killed or badly beaten. Thank you very, very mucy. Kind regards Viviana Archer-Todde Community Cohesion Officer Calderdale Council Third Floor Northgate House Northgate HALIFAX HX1 1UN
08/25/2008  I would like to make you aware of a touching music tribute to Matthew Shepperd. It was posted on Youtube 10 days ago, I hope you appreciate this notice. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAXpUwttRVw
08/25/2008  Dear Sir/Madam, I am a young gay man living in scotland (UK). I am constantly campaigning for the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transexuals and any minority or group of individuals that are discriminated against for being different . Although on the outside our country looks like it has reached a great stage of acceptance but there is still an underbelly of vile discrimiation and hate fueled crimes against us. And i am sure you will agree that education is the cure to the ignorance of many, as the hate is fueled by the fear of those who do not understand . Although in britain we have many cases of hate crime i have bene most emotianally affected by the story of matthew. These kind of crimes fill me with anger, frustration, sadness and hopelessness. But it also gives me the drive to make a diffrence and help those affected and put a stop to the hate in this country. I would like to use matthews story as part of our campaign and make sure his legacy is not just in america but start to drive his story world wide. Because am sure you will agree that hate is world wide and we can only hope to erase hate by making the solution world wide. I ask permission because i feel it is the right thing to do and hope you see my intention to make matthews untimely and very unecessary death not to be for nothing as you have done yourself with your campaign. Kindest regards Andy May peace and love be in your heart.
09/04/2008  Hi, My name is Lee, and I'm writing a short article (approximately 700 words) in Hebrew about Matthew, for an Israeli website oriented for the transgender community. If it is possible I would like a to have your permission to use one of Matthew's pictures for the article. The article will probably go on-line on the 20 of November, the transgender day of remembrance, as part of a group of articles on the subject of hate crime. Looking forward for your replay, Lee.
09/05/2008  Hello. My name is Tatsuya Nagashima. First I'd like to thank all of you for keeping Matthew's legacy and keep fighting and supporting victims of the hate crime. I am a classical concert pianist with international reputation and I am a victim of a gay bash. I was attacked by 7-8 total strangers outside of a local gay bar in Akron, Ohio on April 18th, 2008. Ironically, I just raised $9,000 that night through a charity concert for a non profit organization who provides therapeutic programs for children with terminal illness. After the concert, I decided to stop by a local gay bar to have a few beers before I head back to my home. That is when I got attacked by 7-8 people right outside of the bar. And make this even more ironic...the bar was located right behind Akron City Hospital where the non-profit organization also runs the program at... Through the experience I learned how important to have supportive friends and supportive organizations who can provide us many different ways of help and informations. Luckily, I have a circle of caring and supportive friends and some family members, and through my work, my agent and lawyers gave me enormous comfort by being behind me the entire healing process. I also leaned that gay bashing is not a hate crime under federal law and that made me furious. I stayed in my house for about a week and it made me think of many things. I felt uncontrollable sadness, fear, and also I realized how fortunate I was. Fortunate because I had my own support system and I have a very optimistic personality. Then I started to think what if I was not so lucky. What if I am not out and didn't have anyone to talk to? What if I didn't have my agent and lawyers behind me? So I thought I should contact our local GLBT center to see if they have any programs to support the victims. And that was when I found out that GLBT center in Akron, Ohio is not even active due to the financial problems. I play at least 4-5 charity concerts annually to support such organizations as the Red Cross, American Cancer Society and Habitat for Humanity, but I never really done anything to support our own GLBT community. So I decided to do a charity concert for Akron GLBT Center on October 12th, 2008 in Akron, Ohio. During the event, we are planning to have silent auctions, and on the printed program I want to express how important that we need unite and support our own community. I also want to put a letter from respected and influential figures in our community on the program. I believe it will give bigger impact to the attendees and will help building a stronger support from our community. May I kindly ask a letter from Mrs. Shepard for this event? The letter will be printed on the opening pages a greeting letter/ letter of support. The content of the letter is totally up to her. If she can share her thought that would be wonderful. If she can help us, I will send return envelop to you. 100% of the proceed will go directly to support the GLBT Center. Thank you for your time and consideration. Respectfully, Tatsuya Nagashima http://www.Tatsuya-Pianist.com TatsuyaNagashima@yahoo.com 216-469-1856
09/05/2008  I am the mothe/sister of a gay brother and child. I have heard Judy Sheppard speak and i was overwhelmed. I woul love her to speak in our community. How would I go about this? Many thanks in advance, Shelley
09/28/2009  I have an exciting idea to further the aims of the Matthew Shepard Foundation. I believe it may capture the imagination of people of all walks of life irrespective of any defining characteristics. I would like to share the idea with you. Is there an email address to which I could send my idea in the form of a word document, or an address to which I could post hard-copy please?
06/01/2009  Can you help us get the word out about an equal rights event? Would it be possible for Judy Shepard to come? We are doing Colors Across the River for Equality - a march of 1000 pride flags across the Centennial Bridge over the Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois. We need at least 500 people! The event is Sun., June 21 at 4 p.m. See our website for complete info www.qcpride.org Thank you!
09/11/2008  Hello. I attend Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, Ca and we are putting on the Laramie Project. I am in it and was doing reserch when i came accross this website. I think that its wonderful that there are websites inspired by him. I'm so happy to know how passionate people have gotten for this subject :)
09/15/2008  I would like to find out the mailing address to make a tax receiptable donation. Secondly, I would like a contact to see if it might be possilbe to get Judy Sheppherd to speak to our Union's annual Social Justice Dinner later in the year. I think she would be a dynamic speaker, and I was wondering about her availability and her fees and or donation? I represent a Union of very progressive teachers. Thanks Ron Vine Hamilton
09/19/2008  This isnt really a question, I would like to commend Judy Shepherd as a mother. My daughter, is a student at ECU, a very close friend of hers is gay and she attended the seminar in Greenville, NC 9/18/08. She said it was so moving....through the eyes of my daughter, I felt your pain to such a senseless crime....Bless you and your family....Matthew will always live on.....
09/24/2008  Good afternoon, My name is Missy Thomas and I work at State Farm Insurance Company. I spoke to Judy Shepard at the 2008 Out and Equal Conference in Austin a couple weeks back regarding trying to find some resources to assist my friends who are teachers here in central illinois. She asked me to contact Tim to find out where I could get Safe Zone stickers or something like that for the teachers to include on their doors for students to know that they can share or come out to them without any backlash etc. Please let me know how you can help. Thanks so much for all you do for the youth!!! Missy
09/28/2008  I'd like to obtain posters with Matthew's picture, his date of birth and his date of death on them. I'd use them both for the PFLAG chapter I lead and for the college where I'm faculty advisor to the Gay-Straight alliance. I'd like to hold a candlelight vigil on Oct. 12, if at all possible, and need materials that I could distribute. Many thanks. Toni (mom of a gay son)
06/02/2009  If you would like assistance editing/proofreading your website content I would be happy to volunteer to do so. I read your Kathy Griffin interview and it contains several errors, which detract from the impact of the article. I love your sight, and wish you all the best. I work for the U.S. District Court in L.A. as a clerk to a federal judge and was an English major in school, so between working in the legal field and being an English major I've got a good eye for proofreading.
09/29/2008  I was watching the Glaad awards and Judy came on the screen. This isn't really a question, more like a thanks. I know it sounds bad, but I learned who I was by watching the Lifetime movie dedicated to Matthew Shepard. I can't find another movie that makes me smile one moment, then cry the next. It took guts to make a movie of him and thanks to her having the guts to make it, I am who i am today. Thanks again for having the guts to stand out and make a site and movie dedicated to him. Plastic Imperfection <3
10/03/2008  No question, just sending love and peace your way. My love and I live in Gillette WY. We moved into our little trailer ten years ago October 12, and that evening Lynne spread lit candles and homemade signs in front of our house: "Matt Shepard, Rest In Peace" "Matthew Shepard, Not to be Forgotten" Since that time we have faced our own struggles as lesbian Catholic moms of four. I had the privilege of attending SD Pride at Mt. Rushmore last July, and was very inspired by the wonderful young man from the Matthew Shepard Foundation. I recently became a member of the MSF and if you ever need a contact lesbian mom type in NE Wyoming, here I am, here we are! Eternam habeas requiem Matthew Shepard.... As the REACH Peer Educators, we work to promote social justice and strive to promote open dialogue on campus The REACH (Reaching for Education, Affirmation, Community and Harmony) Peer Educators are an award winning group of 45 volunteers and are currently programming our 2009 Stop the Hate Week event. Our focus will be to have educational facts about hate crime/bias incidents all over campus using our posters, through our passive display, information tabling, expert panel seminar, workshops, art contest and movie series. All of our events including movie series covers issues of immigration, sexual assault, LGBT issues along with various speakers at these screenings. This year Stop the Hate Week will include a student designed Stop the Hate T-shirt. There will also be posters, buttons, key chains and magnets with the theme of a stop sign logo for this year as part of our campaign. REACH is a non-profit organization of student volunteers who work with a modest budget. We rely on contributions and co-sponsorships to put on our events. UCR Stop the Hate Week is scheduled for January 12-18th 2009 and the REACH Peer Educators have been working hard to put together an informative and educational week for our fellow peers at UCR. We hope you can join us in support of this event. The UCR students and REACH would greatly appreciate any help from your organization to sponsor parts of our program. 10/11/2008  Dear Matthew's Place Hi. I am currently living in Oakland California. Not really sure where to start or to explain what I want to do. I am a poet and a writer and feel that maybe I could do something with that to help the cause and bring awareness. I know his story has been told in the Laramie Project but maybe I can write something that will bring change. This proposition is making me thing that more needs to be done and I want to do something. My talent is my writing and I think through that I can make a difference. Let me know if you have any ideas what I could do. Thank you. I am on myspace.com/rblackbirdr, I just posted a blog "no to Proposition 8" and referenced Matthew Shepard in it. It is time for change, it is time that all Americans are treated as equal in America and that all everyone is protect for horrible acts like this. Thank you, Rowan Blackbird Rhiannon
10/12/2008  I don't have a question per say. I just turned 23 years old. Even for me its hard to believe that it has been 10 years with no progress for gays. I myself am gay and cam out at the age 18. It has not been easy for me I have lost a job and frequently been called a faggot and homosexual. At the same time I have been able to maintain a successful carrier in auto sales. I love my life and what I do, I am deeply sorry for the loss of Matthew Sheppard and acknowledge the fact that the loss must not have been easy. Through Matthew I know my life as a homosexual male has changed and I would love to be able to help the Matthew Sheppard foundation in anyway I can. I may not be wealthy or have monatary things to give, but I would love to give my time with your foundation to help in any way possible. I know the loss you have faced has not been easy, I saw the Laramie Project today for the 100th time and every time I cry feeling the pain you must have felt. I would love the chance to speak with Mr and Mrs Sheppard to tell them how sorry I am for their loss and how much I wish their son was still here with us. In any event I would love to hear back in any reference to a way I could help. Thank you for your time and god bless.
10/14/2008  Hello =] My name is Jordan and I am a 16 year old bisexual teenager. I realized that I was bi a year and a half ago. But yes, well, today at my high school, there was a presentation in our auditorium about hate crimes, and there was a guest speaker named Thomas. He inspired me so much. And because he had helped me so much, I got the guts to tell my family that I am bisexual. My sister seemed to be the most accepting. I can tell her pretty much anything so she was the first in my family that I had told. She is still a little bit uncomfortable with the fact that I am bisexual, but she still talks to me and loves me and she seemed to defend me when I told my mother and stepfather... About those two now, my stepfather listened to me, but he didn't say ANYTHING; and I think my mother is embarrassed to have a bisexual daughter...because she said is NOT going to tell anybody that I am bisexual...I know it is hard for her to accpet the fact that I am bi, and she said she believes me, but it really hurt when she said she wasn't going to tell anybody. Not the rest of my family, not her friends...not my real father...nobody... Is she embarrassed to have me as a daughter?...and what can I do to help her out if she is? And is there any way I can help her talk to the rest of my family and her friends...and my father... about this? Thank you very much for your help and support. All of you are loved and appreciated =D With all of my sincerity and love, Jordan Hotchkiss; a proud to be bisexual.
10/13/2008  I am the president of our local PFLAG chapter and also Executive Director of a local Aids Foundation and was wondering where i would find a dvd copy of the mathew shepard story or a dvd copy of the laramie project or both? Thanks David Jester

10/16/2008  Dear Matthew: I never married because I was more interested in TRUTH and God, etc., and lived most of my life wanting to just be friends and love people - today after 53 years, I am lonely, and sometimes wish I had married and had a son. I consider myself gay, but who really knows and who should really care? If I would have had children, you would have been my "dream son" to have, and to play games with, baseball and such... I have no children. God Bless you little Matthew, you will always be in the back part of my heart. It's a shame people cut your wonderful youthful years off from you - but God is true, he's got you now and you will always be youthful and that wonderful "son". For the parents of Matthew, I give you my prayers and condolences - he was a beautiful son, and still is! Sincerely; Ross
10/22/2008  Our High School is doing the Laramie Project this fall. All of us who are involved have been deeply moved by the play - and are working diligently to get the feeling of the play for the audience so they may also be moved by it. The cast and crew all want Tshirts to wear to generate more interest - and get other students talking. The drama director asked if we could either get a bulk number (about 40) of these shirts at a cheaper price OR if we could use the logo and have our local print shop print one, adding Laramie Project info on the back. Please let me know if either of these would work. Karen Dorman

11/13/2008  I just wanted to say I had never heard of this story until we studied the "Laramie Project" for theater class and it was so inspiring and really got to my heart. I just wanted to both praise and ask his parents and ask them how they found the strength to turn such a negative situation into a positive message for America. I think it's unbelievable what they have done. Thank you for your time. Christen
11/25/2008  Just felt compelled to write that I have read Matthew's stoy in depth for the first time tonight. I cannot express how sad it makes me feel. I hope you know that someone accross the otherside of the world is thinking about you all and Matthew tonight. love Ben
12/21/2008  Hey, incredible !! Probably you don't remember me, almost eight years ago !! Well, I have written you from Paris, as far as the bad translation of your website was concerned in French language : certain sentances had non-sense at all (as mine in English, sorry...). Euhm, you was surprised, and I proposed you to help you for a better adaptation, "freely of course" (do you remember now ?), because I throught, and still think, that your tribute is so important to give a support for young gays and show us (now I am 33 years old) how we are not alone. But after, unfortunatelly, I had lot of familly problems. If you are agree, I can bring up the activities of your Fundation to the French association "Contact" (they have the right to speak and organize campaigns of informations in hight schools, authorized by the French Government) if they don't know you. Last, I just would like to tell you how I would like to help you, in so far as Matthew's story really touched me in a time I had so much problems with the deep homophobia of my dad (now he is dead, and sure he never knew my homosexuality : if he found the sexual orientation about me, he could kill me) and in front of some of my friends at school in the violence of the suburbs of Paris. I really hope to hear from you !! Florent AUBERTIN Appartement 11 48, rue Leon 75018 Paris FRANCE Phone : (+ towards France) 1 42 55 20 31

I'm not a homosexua, l but I support everything you do and for the cause. I have allot of friends whom are gay and to me they are no different then we are. Everyone says its a preference but its not at all,I believe that you are born that way and you usually know by the time your of age to talk. I just believe that everyone should be treated equally and fairly no exceptions. If there is anything I can do please let me know. 02/18/2009  HRC Supporter: The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the nation's largest and most active advocacy organization for LGBT rights. The Colorado chapter of HRC is excited to support such integral work by hosting such events as the upcoming Mile High Gala. This annual event will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the popular Exdo Event center in the heart of Denver's new arts district. The gala is Colorado's only statewide annual, black tie event specifically targeting the LGBT community and its allies. As such, this event continually attracts people of all ages, ethnicities, identities, and geographic locations to Denver celebrating the accomplishments of local citizens as well as popular, celebrity activists. HRC Colorado formally invites you to be a part of this auspicious occasion as a donor to this continuously successful event. The Mile High Gala is highlighted every year by the Silent and Live Auction held at the event, because every year, the auction features items generously donated by local and national businesses and supporters ranging from automobiles to special bottles of wine. This is one of the evening's most anticipated events and serves not only as an important fundraising opportunity, but as a marketing tool for businesses supportive of the LGBT community and the equal rights movement. Hundreds of participants generously purchase tickets, tables and sponsorships to attend each year and bid on auction items. HRC Colorado is currently looking for individuals and businesses that would like to donate items for the Not-So-Silent and Live Auctions, and would like to encourage you to think about the benefits of donating items for the event. Studies have shown that nationally, 15 million gay and lesbian persons have a collective buying power of $495 billion The purchasing power of Colorado's LGBT communities alone comprises over $10.6 billion One survey found that 87% of LGBT individuals have switched brand loyalty to support pro-LGBT companies; with 72% choosing products that advertise specifically to the LGBT market HRC Colorado is asking you to help us make the 2008 Mile High Gala another success. Please help us upport equal rights while allowing us to highlight your business and contributions. All contributions are welcome, so please take advantage of this opportunity. This is an excellent way for businesses to introduce themselves to the LGBT community for the first time and for veteran supporters to show their continued solidarity during a time of political fervor. 02/28/2009  Does Judy Shepard do keynote addresses? If so, how do I go about looking into this?
03/11/2009  I am directing Branham High School's (San Jose, CA) production of the Laramie Project, and we would like permission to use photos of Matthew in the play, which will run March 19, 20 and 21. I understand that I need to contact Matthew Matassa, but was unable to find a direct email address for Mr. Matassa on the website. I can be contacted either by email at r.burnsid@cuhsd.org or by phone: 408-460-2983. Thank you very much for your consideration. Rachelle Burnside
03/14/2009  Since our dear matt's death, Ive been a proud advocate against hate crime in my own ways. I have a new blog that has articles about Matt and the Erase Hate campaign. Ive already signed up and would want to know what else can i do to help here in the Philippines were gay issues aren't yet appropriately tolerated. my blog is www.holdenisgod.blogspot.com.
06/02/2010  I have always loved Barbra Streisand. I love the whole Barbra, her struggles. Her life as a young Jewish woman. I love her music, oh, the music and her incredible acting. I find it disconcerting that a woman who has had every opportunity to be educated about it still thinks sexuality is a preference. It is not a preference nor is it an orientation. These words imply that sexuality can be changed, like a hairstyle. Our sexuality is just who we are, a living, breathing person. It defies explanation. We're all just people who want the basic things in life.
03/26/2009  I was wondering if I could use a picture of Matthew in my high school paper. I am writing a news story about the Day of Silence we are hosting this year which will include the organization's involvement in it.
03/31/2009  Hello! I am producing part of the Laramie Project for my senior theater recital at Goshen College in Indiana, and I was wondering if I could have permission to use a higher resolution, not-stolen-from-Google picture of Matthew to use as projection as a part of the performance. I am also wondering if you have literature I could distribute at my performance. Thanks! Grace Eidmann
04/02/2009  Please add me to your e-mail list.
04/08/2009  I am of the understanding that the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act has been passed by the current House of Representives and is scheduled to be reviewed by the Senate. Is this correct? Thanks,Jack
04/17/2009  I have come out 2 years ago and have been a professional speaker for 12 years teaching financial seminars. I now want to be a voice for gay rights, humanity and waking people up. I have many connections that work with this org and would like to see if there is a place for me to help bring the message. My background includes the right wing Christian issus, was there, repressed, unacceping parents and a story of overcoming.... I would love to hear how i can make a difference Peace Vince
07/01/2009  I am a straight Ally for LGBT rights and have recently completed a book which is now published called The Spell of Religion and the Battle Over Gay Marriage. My author's note in the beginning of the book includes the story of how I learned about Matthew and how this knowledge propelled me forward with writing the book. I was reluctant beacause my three children are all devout Mormon and supported Prop 8. At the end of the book is Dustin Lance Black's acceptance speach when he accepted the Oscar for his screenplay Milk. I would love to offer a copy of my book to you and to perhaps post a link for it on your website. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Warmest Regards, Sheri Lawson 949-351-0420 sheri42lawson@gmail.com
05/02/2009  I live in New Hampshire. What can I do to help in honor of Matthew?
04/30/2009  Would you kindly get the facts up instead of this halfassed controlled stuff that beats around the bush about getting out the facts of what happened to Matthew? It is clear that an idiot congresswoman in NC did not have the facts straight and that is partly your fault for not putting them anywhere on your site. All you have up is something about how you'll do it later. It is time to get the bottom line about the court facts about how we KNOW it was a hate crime, so that Virginia Foxx and her ilk can no longer spread confusion. You are letting down Matthew by not getting out the facts of his story at a minimum. All the pretty colors do not help. And trying to prevent people from posting his photo is not going to help either. His photo needs to be spread freely all over the internet so that his story is never forgotten Instead you are hiding info and trying to control it - for what? To get money for your site? Don't you understand that the more info you make freely available, the more people will be drawn to your site to donate? And what is this about requiring people to "register"? are you not aware that in this age of identity theft, a lot of people are not apt to put their name into a database - you are just driving people off instead of getting the details and facts up in plain view. I am outraged at Virginia Foxx's misstatements but I can't be SURE she's wrong because there are no facts about what happened to matthew on this site, just an allusion to him looking like a scarecrow and being killed. Nothing clearly about a hate crime. You should spell it out. This is like what happened with the holocaust deniers. If you do not get the story out then it will be forgotten. Matthew Shepard had an adorable face, from what I see on this page. (And I'm female by the way). He would have been a much more "star" looking person than the actor playing his role in that film, who did not do matthew's good looks justice. His face along with his story should be encouraged to be spread around the web, with links to your site. Instead you are writing FAQs that tell nothing about what happened to him, just warnings that you "control" his photo. You are wasting the potential of this site and doing a gross disservice to Matthew and the GLBT community. Stop acting like a control freak and let loose of the facts and the things that will move hearts -- his FACE and his story, for god's sake. Encourage people to post his story and his face everywhere. Ask people to donate but do not require it. The biggest service people can do is spread the message; that is worth hundreds of dollars of work for each person who does that. Wake up and look at what is happening. When a congresswoman is confused, you have not done your job. Stop holding on to the info and photos like a miser and get the info and the photos spread around -- start a drive to get it out. And get us the FACTS on what happened so we can fight misstatements with facts. I want to write a blog today about what Ms. Foxx got wrong. But I do not have any facts from this page to back me up if I dispute what she said because you did not put any up. What the heck is slowing you up? You've had years! And I can't put his heartbreaking cute face on my blog in a complaint about Ms. Foxx because you have written a FAQ that warns people to get permission first. Are you out of your mind? You have the wrong priorities. encourage people to spread the facts. Tell them you'd prefer they link back to you in a blog to bring people to you and that you hope they donate but don't hide the facts of the crime or warn people about using the photo -- encourage it. matthew's face is like a rock star's -- look at this boy's face. He reminds me of a young Michael York around the time of Cabaret. An absolute star. Stop hiding his light and get it out. That is the best thing you could do to get revenge on what happened to him -- get the story out, encourage the photo be posted everywhere as a reminder of a heartbreaking loss that anyone has to feel when they see that face. instead a congresswoman gets by with helping us forget he was there and we can't combat this misinfo or confusion by putting up his image because you're running your site as though control freaks. Let loose of the truth and encourage it be spread freely! And stop wasting time, get it done now, time is wasting.
04/30/2009  I just watched the Rachel Maddow Show and learned about Rep. Foxx's comments and "clarification". I am outraged by her ignorance. Please let me know if there is any organized effort to impeach her. I would like to do anything I can to send a message to Rep. Foxx and other such dangerous hate-mongers in power that there is a price to pay. Thank you.
04/30/2009  I just need to say thank you. Just watched Judy on Rachel Maddow and I need to say thank you. And I'm sorry. I will continue to fight for equality with Matthew in my heart. Billy Bradford Castro Valley, CA
05/01/2009  forgive me, I was just reminded that the prejudice and ignorance and hate of this world, this country is not quite extinguist. I was reminded by the statements of Congresswoman Foxx, and Keith and Rachael. In that spirit I woul like to have permission to to hold a memorial dart tournament in Mattew's name to help raise awareness and raise funds for Mattew's foundation. The dart bar that I shoot out of is called the Naughty Prince (I know, but not a gay bar), but is one of the only soft tip dart bars in the Denver area. We have however had the pleasure of the company of a few of the G&L league of denver Play in our leagues. And have myself and several others of my bar particpated in the annual G&L Denver city tounament that they have. If you think that this may something that you may be interested in, or could be helpful please contact me at your leisure. Thanks. Mik
05/01/2009  I want to submit posters/fliers that I have created (motivated by the heinous comments made by Virginia Foxx). Can you please tell me how I can send them to you? If I had a "regular" e-mail address, I could submit them as attachments. I am very eager for you to see them and hope to hear from you soon. Thanks!
05/01/2009  Just a comment. Congratulations on the passage of the Hate Crimes bill in Congress. I watched Judy's interview on Rachal Maddow and was VERY IMPRESSED> your website is terrific. You are making a huge difference to our teen population. Thanks. I am so sorry that this all had to come about because of the brutal torture of Matt - Judy could have retreated and instead set up this foundation to honor his memory. Thank you. and thank you for continuing to speak about this to any and all that will hear!!!
05/03/2009  One of my internet friends Cory. He told me there was an LGBT Homeless youth program thru you guys. One in denver, san fran and baltimore. He lives in denver. 05/18/2009  My name is Matt Ridgway, i live in Perth western Australia and recently watched both The Matthew Shepard Story and The Laramie Project! I was shocked and sadened by both the movie's! Being a gay boy i grew up in a similar place i was pushed over before and after school daily and experienced allot of the same things! I was highly shocked tho when i saw the Laramie project! The people and how closed minded they are! How horrible for Matthews parents i just cannot believe the things that were said! Matthews death was a horrible thing Horrible! I really hope his death counted for something and my love goes out to his family!!
09/27/2009  I am a GSA member who is in charge of honoring Matthew Shepard Remembrance Day on Oct. 12. I found an image that I would like to put on T-shirts (no profit) for members to wear and also to distribute buttons to allies on campus. I am giving a link to the image. http://www.dosomething.org/project/matthew-shepard-remembrance-video I would really appreciate it if you guys would let us use the image. Thank you for reading this. Tolerance is an issue at our school, and we are working hard to address it. I think that this image and Matthew's story would have an impact on people because I think a lot of the problem is that people do not understand how deep some people's hatred is.
06/11/2009  My son, David, is currently at the Denver Rescue Mission (on the road to a clean & sober life-God Willing). Anyway, he called concerned about a young gay man known only to me as 'Ben'. whom due to some altercation, has been asked to leave the program. My son says that he is 20 yrs., with no-one & no where to go but the streets. My son, David sais " Mom I'm afraid they'll eat him alive out there!" I told David that I would try to see what available help or resources I could find to help this young man. You may contact me (970)334-2335, or better yet-call the mission (303)297-1710-or-(303)295-4309 & ask for David Bickford (you can tell him his mom contacted you about Ben. My understanding is that this young man is scared, lost, alone & pretty 'down & out'. I hope you can help him or direct him to someone who can. Sincerely, Alesia Bickford
08/26/2009  I clicked on the letter O for Oregon, and received Nebraska and North Carolina and New York twice. Is there no Oregon office as of this date? Please advise. Thanks very much. Or, is there a problem with links on this web page?
09/23/2009  I sent this same message to just the Matthew Shepard Foundation but it keeps saying my response has already been submitted so I will send it again to here just to make sure. Dear Judy, My teacher recently contacted your organization with a request for you to come speak to my class...I am the only person in the class that isn't straight. That is not easy to be as you know. I know you are busy with your book tour but that is over in December and I would like it if you gave it some thought about coming to speak to us after your book tour. Ever since I saw you on CNN this past summer I have tried to learn as much about what happened to your son as I could with the hope that I could help prevent this from happening again. I just got done reading your new book about this time last night...I started it on Sunday and for me that is alot to read in a few days. But it is an amazing book...it was hard to read I cried so much. My mom wants to read it very badly. I am not out to my parents...I am sure they know much like you did with Matthew. I think I am ready to tell them...and your book helped me realize that. If something were to happen to me like what happened to Matthew, I want my parents to know the real me not the person they think I am. Judy I love you and your family for turning this tragedy into something that could and indeed does help the gay community. I cry everytime I hear the name Matthew Shepard because I see alot of your son in me by the way you describe him. I would like to tell you that the doors at Gate City High School are always open to you, even if I have to force them open myself. So please give it some thought about coming to speak to us after your done with your book tour. I know its alot of money to travel to southwest Virginia to talk to a class of about 20, but it is needed so badly. I think if you were to speak to my class they would figure out that being gay is not a bad thing. So once again I love you and your family, I hate that you had to go through what you went through and you are in my heart and prayers every single day. Love, Logan Norton
07/16/2009  I'd like to know who to submit information to, so we can get some Alabama information listed on your "Local Services & Centers" page. My mom and I are active members of the PFLAG Birmingham chapter and there are several other PFLAG chapters in Alabama too. There are also many GLBT-friendly church groups and other organizations here, and I'd like to help get them listed so other teens might know who to turn to for help. Please send the info to our email address, sandfan22@yahoo.com. Thanks! Dallas Taylor
07/18/2009  Hello, My name is Jeff Iverson. I have been touched by the story of Matthew for some time now. I am writing to you because he played a part in me coming out. And also many other parts of my life. I am interested in finding more out about the working of the Foundation, where its primary resources come from and also I am curious about your work with addiction and drug abuse. I would very much like to help contribute in anyway possible. Its my personal experience and observation that the gay community struggles with many addiction problem. I recently went to hazelten to seek help. I am now trying to help raise funds for another person who is unable to go. The Fundraiser is being organized by my mother and is going to be a 28 mile run/ bike.. The original idea was just to help pay for a primary treatment which would be only a month long but to help ensure a higher percentage of recovery a 4 month stay in a halfway house is what is recommended. Followed by a sober house. This is what I have spent the last 7 months doing. I know exactly what it is like to be a young gay, depressed male, who feels so hopeless, and I want to do what ever it is I can to prevent any further suffering. This is the first year of this race. So far we have raised a few thousand dollars and have an estimated 30 teams running. I know if it had not been for the love of my family that I would be dead right now, or in prison. This race means so much to me, And I hope that someday I will be blessed to help people. If there is anything you can do to assist us, or if we can somehow assist you please let me know. I would greatly appreciate a phone call from Judy if she is interested. My cell phone is 952.456.1797 Thank you for your time Jeff Iverson Minneapolis, MN

09/28/2009  Schools and communities across the nation are already participating! Be a part of it! Help us get the word out! What: 1st Annual Nationwide You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project When: Monday October 5th, 2009 Where: College campuses and high schools everywhere Members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (GLBTQ) community are far too often the subject of hateful rhetoric. From slurs to jokes to anti-gay sermons spewed around the country - society often tries to tell us that GLBTQ individuals are evil or strange. Despite the incredible strides being made with equality - GLBTQ individuals are still often made to feel isolated and alone. Anywhere from 25-50% of GLBTQ youth are initially rejected by their families. An estimated 60% of GLBTQ youth feel unsafe in American schools due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. GLBTQ youth are still four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. It's time to combat the influence of hateful rhetoric that seeks to isolate members of the GLBTQ community. It's time to remind our community members that they are never alone. During the 2005-2006 academic year, students at Drew University began penning inspirational messages in sidewalk chalk that read, "You are loved," "You are wonderful," and "You are beautiful." These chalk messages quickly became a familiar quirk around Drew's campus - popping up every Coming Out Week and Day of Silence to remind members of the GLBTQ community that they are loved - and that their love is appreciated. In April of 2009, a member of Montclair State University's Spectrums approached one of the original authors of the chalk messages. She asked her if the initiative could be made statewide. Why stop at statewide? This year, we are asking colleges and high schools everywhere to participate in the chalk message project. All that is required is a simple piece of sidewalk chalk - and a couple of your own inspirational, positive quotes. Write these quotes all over the grounds of your campus - for everyone to see. We also highly encourage schools participating to write an opinions piece to your school newspaper explaining the meaning behind the project. Let's educate society on the need for loving dialogue rather than divisive hate speech. RSVP on our facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=168779860464&ref=mf Visit our blog: http://dreamsuntitled.tumblr.com/ Please email chalkmessages@gmail.com to participate. Contact Jen Dugan at (201) 247-6419 for more information.

09/28/2009  I am about to retire (Dec 09) and am interested in possibly doing some volunteer work for the Foundation. Are there any opportunities for this in the Cleveland, Ohio, area? Thanks.

06/02/2010  To whom it may concern I am ready to fight for my right to live with dignity By Bolivar Bracho Hello there, my name is Bolivar Bracho. And this is a desperate cry for help. I am an immigrant from Venezuela. I am seeking help to obtain citizenship through Political and Homosexual Asylum. I need an immigration lawyer to file for asylum for me. My petition for asylum (originally filed in Miami, Florida on February 26 2006) got denied on May 19th 2010, which cost me $ 5,000 dollars. I had agreed to voluntarily leave the country upon filing if denied. Consequently, I need to file an appeal by June 18th 2010 (deadline to file) to be able to remain in the country legally. I feel my previous lawyer just took my money and run away. I have been doing everything to prove that I deserve to stay here in the United States. I have been following all rules and laws, such as getting work permits every year during my asylum case process, working, and paying taxes. I participate in political events even though I cannot vote. I believe highly in freedom of speech and the right to participate in a democratic system without retaliation. I have been faithfully living with my domestic partner here in Maine for the last 7 and 1/2 years since my arrival in 2002. We own a home, not a house, in Lebanon, Maine and we are proud owners of our family dog Daisy. I am currently taking classes at the Sanford Community Adult Education Center in Springvale, Maine in order to improve myself. I am taking English ESOL classes, math and computer classes. I am fluent in English as well as in Spanish. I am seeking help since I don't believe my current attorney has properly advised me during my case process. I need to find a good immigration lawyer or someone to guide me, preferably pro bono or at low cost. I need help to understand my options to continue to live with dignity in this country. According to the immigration judge that saw me case, I don't have any good reason to remain in the country. So he gave me 60 days to voluntary leave the country. And I have 30 days to appeal the judge's decision, which would cost me $ 3,000 dollars if I decided to use the same lawyer. I do not have that kind of money!! Please help! I don't know what to do. It seems the judge expects me to easily leave my family here in Maine. It's almost 8 years of relationship with my partner. I personally don't think so. I am not a quitter. So I am ready to fight for my right to continue to live with dignity in this country. Please help! Sincerely, Bolivar R. 10/03/2009  Judy and friends, Matthew's story has taken my breath away. Judy you are currently on TV, and cant call in - I was attacked in late August 2009. In legal actions now in NJ. I am 42. Attacker is 35 male. Need input - and support. Call if and when you can. All the best, Nancy
10/04/2009  Hello, I recently finished reading Judy Shepards book that I purchased at Barnes and Noble in Lexington Ky. I have to say when I picked this book up and started reading, I couldn't put it down at all. I know I had several times that I was brought to tears that such a young man was treated that way. I am a 31 year old gay male and even today I hear people say hurtful things about gay people when they have no clue that I am gay. I look at them and educate them with the foolish things they are saying. I just want to thank you for your work and such a wonderful book. May god be with you and your family.
10/05/2009  I have attempted several usernames and the site will not accept them. Perhaps you can assign one and register me. Thank you. I attended Judy Shepard's book tour appearance in Salt Lake City and have just finished her memoir and poowerful retelling of the story.
10/06/2009  Dear Matthew Shepard Foundation, My name is Rob Leinheiser. I am a sophomore at Springfield High school in Springfield, Pennsylvania. First off I just want to say thank you. For everything your doing. I have always supported gay rights and I'm just so happy that there are organizations like yours in the world. Second, I need some advice. I don't know if you'll be able to help me, but if you can't than please just accept my thanks. You see, what inspired me to come to this site in the first place and further research Matthew's story is that my school is putting on a production of The Laramie Project. I am a member of the cast and I've just been so happy to be working on it. it's really such a moving and great play. I have always loved theatre and acting and this is now one of my favorite plays. One of my parts is as Aaron Kriefels, the poor boy who found Matthew the next morning, and I've just poured my heart and soul into this character. I think it's the hardest I have ever tried to develop a great character because I feel I owe it to him and to Matthew to get it right. Matthew's story has really spoken to me. I still remember the day I came home and told my mom about the new play and she said she still remembered when it happened and just how horrible it was. I've just tried my best to really think about this play and Matthew so I can give the best performance I can. But that's where my problem comes in. You see, I've been thinking a lot lately about people, and how gay rights has so much controversy behind it. then I go to school and I hear freshmen and even upperclassmen being so rude and disrespectful towards homosexuals. They toss around the words gay and fag as if they were an insult or curse word. "Why are you so gay?" or "You're such a faggot" or even "That's so gay" not referring to a person, but an action or a thing. And I just stand there in shock. I just can't believe it. I know many gay people in the school, and some of my fellow cast members are as well. Our director and acting teacher at the school is an openly gay man and I just have the utmost respect for him, especially living in such a conservative neighborhood. And when I hear these kids say this, I just want to cry. I'm not gay, and I'm not about to say I know what they go through because quite frankly I don't. I'm not going to say because I know gay people I speak for all of them because I don't. I know a lot of people can just laugh this off and not let it bother them, and I have so much respect for those people. I don't think the opinions of a bunch of kids matters in the long run. but I started thinking a lot more about it in the last few weeks and I'm just stumped at what to do. In addition to theatre I'm also a PEER counselor at the school, and we're always told to stop stuff like that to make school a safe environment. So last week, while I was in choir class a freshman overheard that I was doing the show and said, "Man that's so gay, You're so gay." And I just looked at him and said "You really shouldn't say things like that." and he responded with "why not?" And so I said "Because it can be hurtful to people who are gay." And he laughed at me. Then I said "What's wrong with being gay anyway? You know a lot of students here are gay." And he looked at me and said something that I swear to god I will never forget. He said "What do you mean? It's wrong. it's just wrong." And then he got two other freshmen. "Hey, this kid just asked what was so bad about being gay." "it's wrong!" one of them immediately responded with the other following en suit. and I was just awestruck. I mean, I knew kids used the word in a bad way, and although it saddened me that they did that I didn't think it really mattered as long as they didn't hurt anybody by it. but when he said that it was "wrong", I don't know, I just lost hope for my generation. I mean I always assumed that their use of the word was just an immature habit that they would grow out of. But he said it was wrong. Personally, I didn't care whether he thought it was right wrong or nothing, but he showed no respect whatsoever towards them. And I know this is the case in many places in the world where ignorant people will preach that homosexuality is wrong. but this was a 13 or 14 year old kid. And he literally showed no remorse. I really don't think it was a belief inherited from his parents either, I would have understood and accepted that. but it seemed like these kids were just came to the conclusion themselves. I mean, how do I handle that? I want to educate these kids and show them that this is an actual group of people, and just like Muslims, African Americans or any other group they deserve respect even if you disagree with their views. I went to a Catholic grade school too and even there they were tolerant of other religions and even homosexuals because they taught to respect others. but I couldn't find the words to say that so they would listen. So I just sat there in silence and let it go on. And I haven't stopped thinking about it since. like I said, I doubt there's anything you can say to help me. I guess all I want is for them to respect gays like I do and be more tolerant, and maybe that's too much to ask. I don't know. I just know that I haven't stopped thinking about it since it happened and about Matthew. And how maybe if McKinney and Henderson were taught to be tolerant at a young age he would still be alive. I just wanted to share that with you, but most of all I want to again thank you. not a day goes by I don't think of Matthew Shepard's story now, because I find so much meaning in it. Thank you for your time and thank you again for doing what you do!

10/13/2009  My spouse and I conduct LGBTQ-related training and educational presentations on safe schools, health disparities, coming out, same gender marriage, and other topics. We like to relate the statistics and facts to life by including stories, graphics, and photos of real people and situations. We would like permission to include a photo of Matthew in our sessions - his story is a powerful one and helps to explain the difference between crime and hate crime. We generally don't charge for our training sessions, so don't have funds to pay a licensing fee. Thank you for your consideration. Sherri & Vickie Paxon
10/14/2009  I don't have a question but a comment. I was raised in the bible belt. Being gay is something that you definetely do not want to be in this region. Christian love will quickly turn to hate if someone is known or thought to be gay. Since my teenage years, I have wrestled with my gayness. I've struggled to live a heterosexual lifestyle which has been sort of a hell in itself. Lying to oneself on a daily basis leaves emotional scars that are at times unbearable. I've tried to kill myself on two occasions. The first time was when I was 15. I knew then that I was gay and at the time would rather be dead than to face the prejudice and hate that I knew would surely befall me if I were to come out. As I read Mathew's story and later as I watched the movie, I was overcome with great sadness and remorse. He had the courage to endure the hate that others had for him, while I was afraid to face it. I pray that any other young men who are struggling with their sexuality will have the courage to admit to themselves and to others who they truely are. I wish I had done so. I also pray that their parents will love them unconditionally. I always knew in my heart that mine would disown me if I were to tell them the truth so I chose to live a lie and it has almost destroyed me. Thanks for reading. Lane
10/15/2009  Good morning, my name is Adam Smith, and I one of the proud few to have attended the The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later at The Goodman Theatre on Monday. In order to remain vigilante about LBGT (and racial) issues within my own community, I came across an extremely disturbing article from the far reaches of Chicago's western suburbs. In Geneva, Illinois (pop. approximately 20,000) a tenured Geneva High School teacher uttered racial and homosexual insensitive comments. It is an outrage that the school board Vice President Tim Moran thinks only a warning is the appropriate reprimand. As much as the greater Chicagoland area would love to claim acceptance and tolerance of all human beings, this is proof that even those in the education system aren't sensitive to the young adults that they instruct. I believe this story, the teacher (David Burk), and the Geneva High School board of educators require national visibility, attention, and action. 10/15/2009  Mr. and Mrs. Shepard, hello my name is Carma Whitlock and I would just like to say your son was an inspiration to us all. I was only 8 year's old when this happened to your son Matthew, and even then i didn't know there could be so much hate in the world, even at 8 year's old. I just now heard the story of your son and what happened to him, but in that short time of knowing, i feel like i know him, i feel this strange since of comfort when i think about your son and the courage and strenghth he had to stand up for what he believed in. He was a remarkable young man, and there's no telling what he could have done. He will be in my heart forever, when i found out who he finally was' and what he had to endure I cried and was saddened by this event. No one should have to die like that and i am truly sorry your son was taken from you that way. My school Dalton State College held a memorial in his honor on October 12, 2009 to show everyone what a remarkable man he was. I may not know your son but he has truly touched my heart in every way possible, i have his picture in my room to remeber him and celebrate him forever.
10/17/2009  Is there anything services, community outreaches that have to do with the Matthew Shepard foundation going to happen in Denver,Colorado?
10/18/2009  I would like to tank Mrs. Sheapard for the wonderful book she has written about her story. It's the first time that I have read something that was from the heart and truthful.I thank her for all her work and pray she keeps it up. I am also greatful for her work on the hate crims bill. I am a 53 year old male living in New york and at the age of 12 I was placed in a nut house by my father because I was gay. I ran away from there and met a man that I would spend the next 37 years of my life with until his death six years ago. I was responsable for help bring about domestic partnership in the city of New york in 19991 and it took five years in courts to being that about so I can fully understand the hard work it takes in getting things done to protect all people from hate. Thank you so much for all you have done for people all over the world. I pray this never happendeds to another person ever again. By the way Mrs. Shepard is a wonderful speaker and gets her message across very well. Stephen Rzewuski
10/19/2009  I am the mother of a gay son and I have recently gone back to school. I am doing a project on hate crimes for my college class and would like to know the best way to spread the message to my class and school. I want to inform them intellegently and we also do not have a hate crime law or law enforcement department in our community (Hancock County Mississippi) and would like information on how to start to get this developed as we have a large gay/lesbian population. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
10/19/2009  I am writing to ask if I may use Matthew's photo and Information from Matthew's Story in a multi-media presentation at Pridefest 2010 in La Crosse, WI. And to also reference the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Matthew's Place websites as resourced for the LGBT community. If you have a press kit with high resolution photos, Maybe include the foundation logo if you can, and information about limits or usage can you please send to Tonya La Sarge La Crosse Pride Committee-Graphic Design tlb_sarge@yahoo.com Thank you for all you do!
10/22/2009  what can I do to make sure that the primary focus o fthe gay movement gets directed to the mere fact that we are not being treated equal in our society. Our basic rights as citizens of the United States is ignored each and every day but somehow nobody has been able to make a difference. What can I do? it interferes with my access to health care, my ability to have a valid relationship with my partner of 25 years, and how i am taxed by the same government that blatantly discriminates against me/us. The time for patience is over something has to be done!
10/27/2009  I am a soon-to-be college graduate looking for career and employment opportunities, particularly those opportunities to work with LGBT youth. As a member of the queer community with 6+ years experience with youth advocacy and activism, I aspire to work with youth in middle and high schools, but would be satisfied working with any age group of the LGBT community. Would you be able to direct me to any resources? I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you.
11/26/2009  I was having my thanksgiving today and in the midst of the celebration, Matt suddenly came to my mind. I felt like I had the wind knocked out of me. I had to stop and think for a moment about the Shepard family's day without Matt. I pray that they were able to have a good day and be able to have good memories of their times together to smile about..
02/02/2010  I was wondering if there was any sort of volunteer service run by members of the gay/lesbian community. I know about the switchboards, but I am more interested in being involved in volunteering in my community by helping the elderly by doing yard work, or volunteering in a soup kitchen. If there is already something like this I cannot find it, and if there isn't I would like to know how to best get started. I think that a group consisting of gay people helping all sorts of people in the community would help people see that we are regular, good people and I believe that it would help "erase hate". Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Kara Adams
11/09/2009  This contact is for Dennis Shepard. Dennis and I worked together in Aramnco. As a result of the article in Aramco Expats, I found your website and would like to hear from Dennis. My wife and I currently live in Nairobi, Kenya and would like to catch up with an old friend, Larry Donahoo
11/12/2009  Does Judy travel to speak at private events? I work for bp and am a co-lead for the Chicago chapter of bp pride. Each year, we like to have guest speakers to educate company leaders on LGBT issues. If so, is there a standard fee for her to speak? Thanks, Tony

11/30/2009  Dear Friends, I am a jouranlist living in Canada. I just wanted to let you know, in case you were not aware, about my recent pod cast about Matthew. For the anniversery of his death, I decided to randomly telephone a sample of residents of Laramie and ask them about Matthew. I tape recorded the interviews and cut them together into a short documentary. It is available now on UTube. Look under the title "Conversations with Laramie" or Matthew's name, or my name. I would be very pleased to make it available to you for any use you wish, my compliments, just ask. I would just like to add that there are no pictures of Matthew in the piece because while I was making it I was informed both by a couple of newspapers that I write for, and a young lady who owned some of the Matthew photos, that I would have to pay to use them. This was not a commercial project, I did not make one cent off it and did not have a budget to pay for the photos. Because UTube requires images of something, I had to resort to using pictures taken while I was talking to people on the phone. People have commented on this fact in their feedback to me, and I wanted to explain the situation to you upfront. I really hope you like the piece and I would very much enjoy hearing from you. Best wishes, Joseph Couture
12/11/2009  Welcome! Referring to yesterday's mail sent by me to you, I would like to make two points about which I have forgotten to write. 1. Letter to the TVN can be written in English. English is the most popular foreign language in Poland. So there is no need to write it in Polish and exposing your foundation to the additional and unnecessary costs. 2. However, most of which I forgot to write the address of the TVN, where correspondence should be addressed. Here's the address: Department contact with the audience TVN SA 02-952 Warsaw, Poland st. Wiertnicza 166 On this occasion I would like to inform you that I created the password to the Polish Wikipedia "Matthew Shepard Foundation" is a reference to the already existing password "Matthew Shepard". Here's the website: http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shepard_Foundation Yours sincerely! Tomasz Skrzydlo, Lublin city in Poland
12/16/2009  My new year's resolution this year is to spend more time volunteering. I would love the opportunity to help young people who are struggling with coming out and the pressures that they feel. I am one of the lucky ones, my family never had an issue with my sexuality and their love is unconditional. My problem is I can not find a place to do this type of volunteer work in my area.
12/25/2009  I am a published author and recently released my first book, a personal memoir, for the GLBT community. I did an interview with the Edge Radio Show on QNation.FM and they recommended that I contact Matthew's Place for an interview. My book is named "Reckless" and I would be absolutely honored to be interviewed. Part of the message of my book is to not be afraid to come out and live, but to definately be better than I was and not be "Reckless." It is available on Lulu.com if you would like to review it. I hope to hear from you!

01/31/2010  Will you sign the petition to get the No Place for Hate banners and program put back into Wheatland High School? WHS was one of 25 schools in the entire region to have successfully completed the training and put in the one-year effort to earn the recognition as a school that was "No Place for Hate". The program is an ADL anti-bullying campaign that teaches respect, and acceptance of ALL students. One of the sponsors of NPforH is the Colorado Gay and Lesbian Fund. WHS put up the banners in the fall, but "someone" brought it to the attention of Superintendent Stuart Nelson, who brought it to the Platte County District 1 School Board, who voted 4-3 to take the banners down SOLELY because of the Gay and Lesbian Fund sponsorship and their logo on the corner of the banner. Thankfully, after hearing students' presentation on the program, three school board members voted to keep the banners up. But that wasn't enough. The banners came down. And many members of the school and local community of 3,500 stood up and said "NO" to the removal of the banners and the removal of WHS in the program. ADL's Bruce DeBoskey rightfully said that no, without the CGLF sponsorship and logo on the banner, WHS could not be part of the program. So, once again, Wyoming is being perceived as the hotbed of intolerance. This time it's not Laramie, it's 75 miles away from there, in Wheatland. It's in all the Wyoming newspapers. Channel 9 from Denver has been covering it. It's made some national news. It's become the only thing that's being discussed on The Wheaterville, Wheatland's "alternative news source". On Wheaterville, you can read a letter to the school board signed by 50some WHS alum, letters and comments from parents of current students, the students themselves, and members of the community. PFLAG chapters from all over the country have sent encouraging comments on the blog. Most important, there's a link on www.wheaterville.com to an online petition, with the "lofty goal" (that's what the Wyoming Tribune Eagle called it) of 10,000 signatures supporting WHS getting back the banners and the No Place to Hate designation. Clearly, The Wheaterville petition will need to reach its goal with help from people OUTSIDE of Wheatland. Will you read the petition, and sign it if you agree with its message? Would you consider passing this around, adding it to your website, and asking others to sign? You can get the feel of the story on the Wheaterville, as well as links to other news on it. Google it, Bing it...it'll take you to the petition and Wheaterville. Thanks for reading, and for whatever publicity you can generate for this cause. It goes so far beyond Wheatland, but for Wheatland, it's really important, and an essential part of the education these students, and this community, this state, this country needs! How can we fight for Marriage Equality when basic human rights of GLBT students are being struck down by the school boards that are supposed to be protecting them? Thank you, Laora I refer you to the following news article and video, all also available at www.wheaterville.com : http://www.9news.com Here are a few stand out quotes from two of the board members: http://www.trib.com/... Wheatland, a southeast Wyoming town of about 3,300 residents, is an "ultraconservative community," said school board member Lee Dunham. "If this is the way one chooses, then they can lead this particular lifestyle, but I don't believe it needs to be publicly displayed in a school," Dunham said. School board member Joe Fabian said he believes the Anti-Defamation League is pushing an "agenda that is pro-gay marriage" and that the community of Wheatland is not supportive of that. "They wouldn't want the organization, the Anti-Defamation League, dictating to their children that an alternate lifestyle is a normal lifestyle," he said.
02/03/2010  How would I go about in obtaining an Erase Hate Bracelet? Being Gay myself, I also am proud of who I am and would also love to erase hate and support such a wonderful cause! Thank you.
02/14/2010  i wish to know if Matthew's place does capacity building for organizations especially from third countries,we would like to partner with you so that we may have the capacity to handle such cases in our homophobic country,am from Mombasa kenya and i founded the group Gay Movement Alliance of Kenya, you can view our blog on www.gmak.webs.com
06/01/2010  I live in Northern California and I REALLY wanted to go to Judy's book signing, will there be one in the Sacramento area anytime soon? I have searched the web and have only found the one in LA. Please help, Matthews death dramatically changed the course of my life. I found the strength and courage to come out and be a proactive member of the gay community. Thank you Judy for all you have done for us.
03/26/2010  Today is the first day that I found out about Matthew and his tragic depressing death. I have only the most sympothy that I think anyone could have for someone they don't even know because I I cannot stop crying right now. I found Matthew's new book at my local library in Sparks Nevada sitting on top of a shelf, displayed, for evryone to see. The picture of Matthew caught my eye. When I picked up the book I immedietly noticed the words "My son's murder in Laramie" and I knew that this boy was in fact a homosexual, who died because of a hate crime for being perfect just the way he was, I'm sure. This had already begun to impact me so forcefully because I am a gay 21 year old male that likes to express myself through fashion and sexuality. I just moved to a state in which homosexuality is very fround upond. I'm scared, however this will be the first time that I have been so far away from my gay hating father living in gay friendly So Cal. But here in Sparks Nevada I hope that I will be able to express myself happily, without anymore remorse from this man interfeiring with my personality and way of living. But still I've ended up in a small city where being gay is the most unconventional way of living here and it scares me more than living with my gay hating daddy back home. People out here can easily and hatefully discriminate against our kind and get away with it because last saturday all four of my truck tires had been slashed! And because there is no evidence in my memory as to why this was done my feelings tell me that it was just another hate crime for being my excentric gay self around my apartment complex. When I discussed matters with my mom she said she was becomming afriad that something else would go wrong with me, and I agree with her, because when I hear these real extreme horror stories such as poor Mathew's, beeing beaten to a pulp and left hanging on a fence to die makes me want to run away from people that I'd probably trust if I weren't as afraid of being myself anymore. Mathew's tragic death has inspired the best in me today as well as the worst emotional breakdown for me, in a long time. He was a hero the many lives he must of touched while he was alive, and still is even though he's gone forever and I will never forget Matthew Shepard or his amazing family for putting together so much determination into one thing. Thank you for telling me Mathew's story and giving me the reason to fufil each day as if it were my last here on earth. With so much love and emotion, Kyle Runge.

04/03/2010  My English class is writing a letter to someone we respect or that we find admirable but Matthew is regrettably dead, so I was wondering if you had an address in the U.S. that I could send my letter to his parents or at least the organization. Though its understandable why you wouldn't want to give out an address I honestly mean no harm. :)

05/19/2010  Growing up in England during the late 70's and 80's was a trying time for a person of South Asian origin. I was name-called and terrorized just for looking Asian. After living through some terrifying experiences in England, I went back to Pakistan to find, yet another type of discrimination, gender discrimination. I was not allowed to do many things or make decisions for myself just because I was a girl. When I did, I faced severe consequences, like being forced into marriage and not being allowed to continue my education unless I relented. Eventually, I did overcome hurdles because of my own self-determination and will power. After my marriage, I moved to Saudi Arabia, the Holy Land of Muslims. Living in Saudi Arabia and seeing Islam's harshest interpretation at work, I was compelled to understand the Quran for myself. From my understanding, Islam, my religion clearly gives me equal rights but my people refuse to acknowledge that. What's more, Saudis discriminate against everybody but themselves. I was paid less than a white person, much less that a Saudi, and had no rights. I couldn't even leave the country on an emergency because the government keeps the passports of all non-Saudis, and women can travel alone without permission from their fathers and husbands. These ridiculous rules and regulations made me fed up of all these double standards and hypocrisy and I finally came to the home of the brave and free. I moved to California in 1995, and loved it. No one cared what I looked like, no one knew where Pakistan was, even after I explained it's India's neighbor. I blended in perfectly and felt completely assimilated. I was living the perfect American dream, well-off husband, two kids, sports car, and a beautiful house. I wanted my kids to grow up in one place and enjoy stability and freedom from discrimination. Well, utopian lifestyle was short lived. 9/11 happened! I had just joined a middle school during that horrific week, with no diversity in teaching staff; I felt all eyes were on me. Many teachers came up to me to ask my family and me. The fact that the attackers were from Saudi Arabia and not from Pakistan didn't matter. We all look Middle eastern. Muslims were fearful of internment and there was plenty of talk about it to validate our fears. Everything changed after 9/11. I was suddenly a Pakistani, I was suddenly a Muslim woman, and I was suddenly not accepted. One day, my daughter came back from school and told me about a boy who'd called her a "terrorist" just as she was sharing her All About Me poster. I had realized that I had no choice but to get out into my community and share my culture and show that Muslims aren't all bad people. After the London Underground Bombing in 2007, a person who knew me well called me a "terrorist" and accused me and my family of being sleeper agents and Al_Qaeda members. My first reaction was to cry my eyes out but I started to look at this mishap as a call to engage and create bridges of understanding. My Jewish colleague and I collaborated on a book that would do just that- teach tolerance for Muslims in a Post 9/11 world. There is a lot of literature on tolerance for other minorities but none for Muslims. My colleague, an art teacher, Marian Seiders, also joined us and has illustrated the book. Since the book has been published, we have heard scores of stories from children and adults who have been called "terrorist". We hope you will join our effort and buy our book. You can donate it to a local classroom teacher so that we can nurture tolerant and inclusion in our classroom. www.mommyamia.com Anila Ali

06/18/2010  My son, Scott, is 22 years old. He just graduated from New England Conservatory of Music and has a full ride to gradulate school. He is a wonderful person that happens to be gay. Last night, he was attacked by four large men. It was obvious an attack based on hate. More interesting than the attack was the reaction of people. They observed and did not help. Most importantly is that our son is only bruised. The police caught two of the four men and asked our son to press charges. He / We need to understand if our son is further jeopardizing himself by filing charges. In addition, I want to make sure he is okay psychologically. Is there anyone in your organization that can help. One side note...I have always felt a strong kinship to Matthew Shephard having met him via the news of his horrific story. Ironically, he was born on my birthday and on the year I graduated from high school. It is a strange coincidence that I am reaching out for help through him.

06/30/2010  Our School is opening our theatre season this year with THE LARAMIE PROJECT. We are trying to gather resource and information for our cast and crew. We tried to acquire grant money to take them to Laramie on a research trip for the show, but that did not come through. We are VERY interested in having speakers come and talk to them and/or share any information available to assist with their performances and understanding of the message of TLP. Any advice, suggestions, or help that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Also, does Mrs. Shephard ever do personal appearances? In Lincoln, NE we are 7 hrs aways from Laramie. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration and help with these matters.
07/10/2010  Hello, First of all, I hope you are well. My name is Jen Dugan. I'm the founder of a national LGBTQ suicide-prevention project called the You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project. The You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project is an annual, nationwide project that raises awareness about suicide prevention in the LGBTQ community. As you know, some studies state that LGBTQ youth are four to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. The You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project battles the negative, hateful rhetoric aimed at LGBTQ individuals through the use of positive, loving chalk messages. Each year on the Monday before Coming Out Week - universities, schools, organizations, and individuals organize local chalk writing events. We ask all of our participants to write to their campus, school, or local newspaper to explain why they wrote these messages - thus raising awareness about the cause. We also encourage participants to add their own unique spin to the national Chalk Message Day by organizing an educational event to their liking - whether it be a tabling session in a University Center, a local vigil, lecture, open mic, etc. The project began in 2005 on the campus of Drew University. It was taken nationwide in October 2009 and was a huge success. Participants flooded in from all over the country (and even some in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada). The project was featured on various LGBTQ and mental health media outlets and we obtained support from several prominent LGBTQ and mental health activists. In order to help raise more awareness this year, we are asking LGBTQ organizations across the nation to show support for the You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project. Showing support does not cost any money or require much effort - it simply means that we agree to cross-promote each other's causes to help raise awareness of the efforts being made. Cross-promotion can be as simple as putting up information about each other's causes on websites, facebook fan pages, twitter accounts, and event pages. It's a great way to help raise awareness of the different organizations and initiatives that exist. So far, we've cross-promoted with Trevor Project, No Stigmas, Mad to Live, Active Minds, and other amazing LGBTQ & mental health organizations. Because of their support, we've been able to help link our own followers and participants to these incredible organizations. Would Matthew's Place and the Matthew Shepard Foundation be interested in helping to get the word out about this year's event? We need as much help as possible getting the word out about this initiative - and the more help we receive, the more people will be reached. The 2nd Annual Nationwide You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project is scheduled for October 4th, 2010. More information can be found on our website at http://chalkmessages.org. You can also find us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/d7h4lg If your organization is interested in cross-promoting this cause, please contact us at your convenience. Thank you for your time. And thank you for all the work that you do for LGBTQ equality. Sincerely, Jen Dugan Founder info@chalkmessages.org P.S. "Thank You" - this is not just something I write lightly. It is truly from the heart. I'm 25 years old now. In high school, I was bullied for my sexuality. To say it was a nightmare is an understatement. Very often, I felt afraid and alone as a kid. And yet, there were activists like Judy Shepard and organizations like GLSEN and Trevor Helpline taking a stand. I knew that even if my own voice felt silent during those days, better days would come. There were individuals out there fighting for better days. And better days did come. To say my life is incredible now is an understatement. There's no doubt about it: The small actions you take as activists give hope and inspiration to thousands of LGBTQ individuals. Hope and inspiration are two of the most valuable gifts you could ever give to anyone. Thank you for giving hope and inspiration.
