Financial February Presented by State Farm On Matthew’s Place

This month MatthewsPlace.com, our youth recourse website, is talking about the importance of financial stability and planning. Financial February presented by State Farm will give us the chance to talk about how LGBT youth have unique obstacles in reaching financial security.

Sadly, it is still legal in 29 states for employers to fire you simply because of your sexual orientation, and in 34 states you can be fired because of your gender identity. Because of these discriminatory laws, LGBT youth need to be all the more vigilant about how they plan for their financial future. Less than a third of all parents express confidence in their ability to discuss basic financial skills with their children. That conversation can be all the more complicated if parents feel uncomfortable talking about future relationships of their child. Because few schools address financial education, we believe that setting aside this month to help you think about your financial future is a good investment of our time.

Throughout Financial February our bloggers will be posting about their own adventures in financial planning, so check back often.

Many thanks to State Farm Insurance and State Farm Bank for partnering with us to talk about this under-examined part of growing up.
