The (Marriage) Equality State

Late yesterday, four couples and Wyoming Equality filed a lawsuit at the state court in Cheyenne, Wyoming seeking equal access to marriage and the associated rights and responsibilities.

I’m so glad to see progress on LGBT rights in my home state, and I trust that our judicial system will work for these couples who only want their love and relationships to be legally recognized,” Judy Shepard, President and Co-founder of the Matthew Shepard Foundation said. “ These couples are an inspiration for Wyoming people and especially the LGBT youth who look up to them. Dennis and I wish them a swift and straightforward victory.

Marriage equality lawsuits have become a regular news story, with favorable rulings in federal courts across the country. Wyoming’s lawsuit was filed in the state court and argues that denying marriage licenses to loving, committed same-sex couples is a violation of the Wyoming State Constitution.

We are hopeful that these couples, Wyoming Equality and the legal team from the National Center for Lesbian Rights will represent Matthew’s home state well, and we wish them all the best.
